Why Anant Chaturdashi asks for silk, not cotton
The 10-day utsav ends on the 11th day. Ganpati bappa goes back to Kailash. Families walk with the idol to Yamuna ghat or the local society pond, chant ganpati bappa morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya, and immerse.
It is not a cheerful day exactly. Emotional. Big goodbye.

1. Paithani silk (maroon body, green pallu)
The classical choice. Peshwai royal weave, single-ikat mor-hansa border, mango pallu motifs. Nine-yard or six-yard, both work. For visarjan procession, six-yard is easier to walk in.
Maroon body with a bottle-green pallu is the traditional Maharashtrian Anant Chaturdashi combination. Rs. 8,500 to Rs. 12,000 in Delhi this week for the entry-grade Paithani. Higher grades run into six figures, not needed for this occasion.

2. Narayan Peth silk (yellow body, red border)
The Pune classic. Slightly lighter weight than Paithani, 380 to 420 GSM, tightly woven. Yellow body with a deep red border and gold zari checks feels celebratory but not loud.
Rs. 3,200 to Rs. 5,500 range. Good pick if this is your first year hosting Ganpati at home and you do not want to commit to Paithani pricing yet.
3. Tissue silk saree in cream-gold
For the daughter-in-law who is not from Maharashtra but married into the family. Cream tissue base with gold checks, or gold zari boota all over. Feels ceremonial without pretending to be Marathi.
Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 8,000 for a proper tissue silk. Falls beautifully, does not crumple in the crowd, matches almost any blouse the wardrobe already has.
4. Kanjivaram silk (soft variant)
Kanjivaram works if the family is Tamil-Marathi or if the mother-in-law prefers South silk. Pick the soft Kanjivaram, not the heavy 700 GSM version, because Delhi September is still warm.
Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 9,000 for a soft Kanjivaram with real zari border. The visarjan procession is 45 minutes on foot in most societies. Heavy silk becomes uncomfortable by minute 20.
Colour rules Delhi ladies actually follow
Deep colours are traditional. Maroon, bottle green, mustard, rust, deep peacock, dull gold. Not the neon pink or the shocking orange that felt right on Ganesh Chaturthi day one.
White or black on Anant Chaturdashi is a no. Both are considered inappropriate for a Hindu farewell puja. Keep them for other days.
Yellow is welcome, especially Narayan Peth yellow with red border. Yellow signals shubh (auspicious) departure, not sad separation.
If you already wore maroon on day one, switch to green or rust on Anant Chaturdashi. Family photos look better with the shift, and the puja pandit will notice you dressed the two days differently.

Silk saree needs a matching silk or brocade blouse, not a cotton blouse. A cotton blouse under a Paithani looks strange in photos and shifts under the pallu weight through the day.
