Boutique GST Margin Playbook for Aug 15 to Aug 31 Wholesale Fabric Restock

Every August after Rakhi settles, boutique owners walk into my counter with a restock list in one hand and a nervous look at their GST book in the other. They know the Aug 15 to Aug 31 window is short. They know Onam demand is peaking down south. But nobody tells them how the boutique fabric wholesale GST margin actually works on paper.

So I sat down last Sunday with three boutique owners over chai.

We opened their invoice books. We ran the numbers thaan by thaan.

This is what came out.

Quick Answer: For a small boutique restocking Delhi Lajpat Nagar wholesale fabric between Aug 15 and Aug 31 2026, keep total wholesale spend at Rs 50,000 to Rs 80,000 across 5 categories. Apply 5 percent GST on inbound invoices. Claim input tax credit if on regular scheme. Hold boutique fabric wholesale GST margin between 55 and 65 percent over landed cost. Composition scheme boutiques under Rs 1.5 crore turnover pay flat 1 percent GST without ITC.

When the GST margin plays out, plus when to skip it

The boutique fabric wholesale GST margin works cleanly when you are buying at a proper wholesale rate against a proper tax invoice. Lajpat Nagar counters give both, since most bhaiya-suppliers here are GST-registered above the Rs 40 lakh threshold. You get a 5 percent GST charge on your inbound thaan bill. You get a proper GSTIN on the invoice header. You get a clean line item for your accountant.

It works best if your boutique is on regular GST scheme (crossed Rs 40 lakh goods turnover) and you can claim the 5 percent input tax credit against your 5 percent output GST. Simple pass-through math. Your effective GST cost on the fabric buy is zero.

Skip the input-credit route if your boutique is registered under composition scheme (turnover below Rs 1.5 crore for traders). You pay a flat 1 percent GST on your turnover instead. You cannot claim any ITC on inbound. In that case treat the 5 percent inbound GST as landed cost, not claimable credit.

Skip the wholesale route entirely if you are still under Rs 40 lakh and unregistered. Buy retail from Sadar Bazaar or your local mandi. Your customers will not demand a GST invoice from you either. The boutique fabric wholesale GST margin math only starts making sense above 30 to 40 metres per month volume.

See, GST is not the enemy here. Confusion is.

The 5 restock buys that hold margin best from Aug 15 to Aug 31

1. Georgette printed suit fabric (20 metres minimum, Rs 4,400 to Rs 6,400)

The bread-and-butter of any wholesale fabric restock in late August. Georgette printed suit fabric moves for post-Rakhi return-gift orders and early September wedding-party function wear. Colour split: 10 metres in wine and rani pink shades, 10 metres in mustard and sage green.

Wholesale rate at 20-metre bundle: Rs 220 to Rs 320 per metre. GST at 5 percent adds Rs 11 to Rs 16 per metre on your inbound invoice. Suggested retail Rs 480 to Rs 720 per metre before your own output GST. Boutique fabric wholesale GST margin lands around 55 percent after landed cost.

2. Chanderi dupatta piece (20 pieces minimum, Rs 5,200 wholesale)

Ready dupatta pieces sell fast in Onam week for southern customers pairing with saree blouses. Rs 260 per piece at 20-piece bundle from Lajpat wholesale. Suggested retail Rs 640 to Rs 880 per piece. Add 5 percent GST both sides. Margin holds at 65 percent even after ITC pass-through.

Book by Aug 18 if you want a top-up in the last week. Chanderi dupattas do not sit long on shelf.

3. Sequins net lehenga fabric (20 metres minimum, Rs 9,600 to Rs 14,400)

The wedding-season pre-book category. Sequins net moves from Aug 25 onwards for engagement functions and sangeet wear. Wholesale rate Rs 480 to Rs 720 per metre with 5 percent GST on top.

Suggested retail Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800 per metre. Boutique fabric wholesale GST margin at 60 percent after landed cost. Book only 20 metres this window because heavy stock is a Diwali-onwards game.

4. Organza embroidered saree fabric (per piece, Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,400)

The dressier walk-in category. Organza sarees are moving well for Onam Sadya lunches and post-Rakhi family functions. Buy per piece from Lajpat: 6-metre length with pallu embroidery.

Wholesale Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,400 per piece. Suggested retail Rs 2,800 to Rs 5,200 per piece. Add 5 percent GST both sides. Margin holds around 55 percent. Book 6 to 8 pieces only. This is not a bulk buy.

5. Cotton kurta base fabric (30 metres minimum, Rs 4,200 to Rs 6,600)

The volume-safe restock. Cotton kurta base moves for daily-wear customer walk-ins across the full Aug 15 to Aug 31 window without festival dependency.

Wholesale rate at 30-metre bundle: Rs 140 to Rs 220 per metre. GST 5 percent adds Rs 7 to Rs 11 per metre. Suggested retail Rs 380 to Rs 520 per metre. Boutique fabric wholesale GST margin sits at 65 percent, the healthiest number in this list.

4 GST margin mistakes that eat boutique profit

Mistake 1: Ignoring the input tax credit line on inbound invoices. Every 5 percent GST you paid on Lajpat wholesale should reflect in your GSTR-2B auto-drafted statement. If your supplier has not filed their GSTR-1 by 11th of the next month, your ITC gets held. Reconcile monthly. A Rs 60,000 restock at 5 percent means Rs 3,000 of ITC sitting at stake.

Mistake 2: Confusing composition scheme with regular scheme mid-year. If your boutique crossed Rs 1.5 crore turnover in FY2025-26, you must migrate to regular GST from April 1. Some boutique-wala think they can stay composition for one more year. Wrong. GSTN system flags you automatically. Talk to your accountant before the Aug restock buy.

Mistake 3: Skipping the e-way bill for intra-state consignments above Rs 50,000. Any Delhi-to-Delhi wholesale bundle above Rs 50,000 needs an e-way bill under Delhi GST rules. Ask your supplier at the counter. Missing e-way bill invites 100 percent penalty on the tax amount if the truck is intercepted.

Mistake 4: Not asking courier for GST invoice on freight. When you send bundles to Jaipur or Lucknow via a courier partner, the freight charge attracts 5 percent GST if the courier is GST-registered. That GST is ITC-claimable if the invoice is in your boutique GSTIN. Ask upfront. On a Rs 2,400 freight bill, Rs 120 of ITC is small but adds up over the year.

Delhi wholesale prices this week vs suggested retail

Item Wholesale rate (Aug 11-15 2026) Suggested retail
Georgette printed suit fabric Rs 220 to Rs 320/m + 5% GST Rs 480 to Rs 720/m
Chanderi dupatta piece Rs 260/pc + 5% GST Rs 640 to Rs 880/pc
Sequins net lehenga fabric Rs 480 to Rs 720/m + 5% GST Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800/m
Organza embroidered saree fabric Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,400/pc + 5% GST Rs 2,800 to Rs 5,200/pc
Cotton kurta base fabric Rs 140 to Rs 220/m + 5% GST Rs 380 to Rs 520/m

Margin cheat sheet. Take a simple 20-metre georgette buy at Rs 300 per metre. Base value Rs 6,000. Supplier bills you Rs 6,300 (their Rs 300 output GST becomes your input GST). You retail the same 20 metres at Rs 600 per metre, so base value Rs 12,000. You bill your customer Rs 12,600 (Rs 600 output GST). Net GST paid to government from your books: Rs 600 minus Rs 300 ITC equals Rs 300. Your actual boutique margin: Rs 6,000 gross before rent, tailoring cost or staff. This is why the boutique fabric wholesale GST margin under regular scheme is the cleanest number on your monthly P&L.

Questions boutique owners ask me at the counter

Do I need GSTIN to buy wholesale from Lajpat Nagar?

Not strictly, but with GSTIN you get a proper tax invoice and can claim 5 percent ITC if you are on regular scheme. Without GSTIN you still get a bill of supply but no credit. For any restock above Rs 25,000 the GSTIN math almost always wins for the boutique-wala.

Composition scheme or regular GST for my Tier 3 boutique?

Depends on your annual turnover. Below Rs 1.5 crore with mostly cash-and-carry local customers: composition scheme (1 percent flat) is simpler. Above Rs 40 lakh with any B2B corporate gifting side: regular scheme lets you claim ITC. Check with your accountant before switching either way.

What HSN code does Lajpat wholesale fabric use?

Woven fabrics of man-made filaments (georgette, chiffon, poly-blend) fall under HSN 5407 at 5 percent GST. Woven cotton fabrics fall under HSN 5208 at 5 percent GST. Ready-made dupatta pieces sometimes fall under 6214 depending on classification. Ask your supplier for the HSN printed on your invoice.

E-way bill kab mandatory hota hai?

E-way bill is mandatory for any consignment above Rs 50,000 in taxable value, whether intra-state Delhi-to-Delhi or inter-state Delhi-to-Jaipur. Portal is ewaybillgst.gov.in. Your supplier generates it before dispatch and shares the e-way number on WhatsApp. No e-way, no truck movement.

What is a safe first-month boutique fabric wholesale GST margin target?

Aim for 55 to 65 percent gross margin over landed cost (wholesale rate + 5 percent GST + freight) in your first month. After 3 months of tracking, you will know which categories move at 70 percent margin and which barely clear 45 percent. Adjust category mix for the next restock cycle accordingly.
