Your college friend's mehendi is three weeks away and you will spend hours on a gadda, then dance. Buy chiffon fabric for mehendi as a saree that is pre-pleated and lined, or as one dupatta over a suit you own.
The short version: Printed chinon chiffon makes the easiest guest saree. Get the pleats stitched, wear a satin petticoat under it and pin the pallu behind your shoulder before anyone puts henna on your hands.
Quick answer: For chiffon fabric for mehendi, order 5.5 metres of printed or plain chinon chiffon for a saree plus 0.8 to 1 metre for the blouse, or 2.25 to 2.5 metres for a dupatta. Expect roughly Rs 250 to Rs 550 a metre for printed or plain chinon. Shop our chinon chiffon collection of 117 fabrics by 1 November. Want to feel it first? Book a counter slot.
Key facts at a glance
Order printed chinon chiffon for a guest saree, plain chinon for a dupatta you can re-wear and embroidered chiffon only for a border or yoke. Printed chiffon hides henna smudges and gadda creases better than plain.
| What to order | Rough price | Metres to order | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed chinon chiffon | Roughly Rs 250 to Rs 500 a metre | 5.5 metres saree plus 1 metre blouse | The guest saree. Florals hide marks |
| Plain chinon chiffon | Roughly Rs 250 to Rs 550 a metre | 2.25 to 2.5 metres | A dupatta over a cotton or silk suit |
| Embroidered chinon chiffon | Roughly Rs 600 to Rs 1,400 a metre | 1 metre blouse or a 2.5 metre dupatta | A thread or sequin blouse with a plain saree |
Chinon is a smoother, slightly heavier chiffon. Mustard, coral, rani pink and mint sit well beside a bride in green.
A chiffon saree needs 5.5 metres for the drape and 0.8 to 1 metre of 44 inch fabric for the blouse. A dupatta needs 2.25 to 2.5 metres. Add 0.25 metre if the print runs one way.
Ask the tailor for a fall along the saree hem and picot on the pallu edge. For a dupatta, a hand-rolled hem looks finer than picot but takes an extra day.
Chiffon is see-through in daylight, so a mehendi saree needs a matching satin or shantoon petticoat. Plain light shades show the most. Prints and embroidered areas hide more, though the petticoat still matters.
Line the blouse in cotton so it stays cool. Check that thread or sequin work is backed with net so it will not scratch.
Pre-stitched pleats with a hook keep a chiffon saree in place when you sit cross-legged for two or three hours. Loose chiffon pleats slide apart on cotton gaddas and drag on the floor when you stand.
Our counter tip: ask for seven or eight slightly wider pleats so your knees do not pull them open. Keep the hem an inch off the floor, away from spilled cones.
Wet henna is the bigger risk. Pin the pallu flat over the left shoulder and fix it at the back with two safety pins before your turn with the mehendi artist. Paste on light chiffon leaves an orange mark that rarely washes out, so pick a print with orange or maroon in it.
Chiffon falls softer and floats more than georgette, so it moves well when you dance. Georgette is grainier and a little heavier, which makes it easier to pleat and less see-through.
Chinon sits between the two, which makes it the safer guest pick if you want float without a fight.

Order chiffon by 1 November so it reaches your tailor by 4 November. A mehendi usually falls one or two days before the wedding, so 19 or 20 November for a 21 November wedding. Tailors slow down around Diwali on 8 November.
Comparing chiffon with georgette, net or cotton for the same function? Our older guide on whether chiffon is worth considering for mehendi covers that wider choice.
From the boutique side: Fall and picot is a small job, so Lajpat Nagar tailors push it to the back of the queue in a muhurat month. Hand over the saree with the blouse order so both come back together.
Chiffon is see-through for a mehendi saree only if you skip the petticoat. Wear a satin or shantoon petticoat in the saree's base colour and a cotton-lined blouse. Printed chinon chiffon shows less than plain pastel chiffon, so pick a print if the function is outdoors in afternoon light.

Keep wet henna off a chiffon saree by pinning the pallu flat behind your left shoulder before your hands are done. Sit with your palms facing up on your knees, away from the pleats. If paste does touch the fabric, let it dry and flick it off. Rubbing wet henna spreads the stain.
Pick chinon for a mehendi dupatta if you want it to float when you dance. Pick georgette if you want it to stay where you pin it. Both take about 2.25 to 2.5 metres. Chinon looks softer in photos, while georgette hides creases a little better after hours on a gadda.
