Ghatasthapana in Your Delhi Society? Fabric Guide for the First-Time Samuhik Puja Coordinator (Navratri 2026)
Fabric Guides · 7 minute read · Updated 21 September 2026
The saree for the "voluntold" RWA coordinator. Red silk. Gold zari. Three-place pallu pin. Done by lunch.
Your RWA WhatsApp pinged last night. The regular Navratri aunty is out of town. You are running the samuhik Ghatasthapana on 3 October 2026.
Twelve days. Panditji, kalash, aarti thali — and what YOU wear.
You sit at the front. Photos with the panditji. Society newsletter mention. Every dadi in Block C, watching.
Why plain-woven red silk is the coordinator's honest answer:
- Reads senior enough for the panditji and the society president
- Holds pleats through six hours of sit-stand-bend during Ghatasthapana
- Photographs sharply in the common-room tubelight, unlike chiffon
Quick answer: Ghatasthapana on 3 October 2026 opens Sharad Navratri. For a first-time RWA coordinator, buy plain-woven red silk (₹1,800 to ₹3,400) or a dyeable red chanderi (₹1,100 to ₹1,700) for a 5.5 metre cut. Pin the pallu in three places, high-neck closed-back blouse, and finish by lunchtime.
The tone the room expects: senior, not showy
Society Ghatasthapana is a formal-informal event. Panditji formal. Society president semi-formal. Aunties watching every pleat.
Your day as coordinator:
- Sit cross-legged for the chant
- Stand up to light the diya
- Walk with the kalash on your head to the lift lobby
The saree has to hold through all of it. And it has to look like you knew what you were doing when you picked it.
The traditional shade is red. Not pink, not maroon. Blood-red or clean scarlet. Gold border. Nothing more.

Browse Silk Fabrics →The 4 red-family options we recommend for a Ghatasthapana coordinator
1. Plain-woven pure red silk with a 2-inch gold zari border (₹2,200 to ₹3,400 per 5.5 metre cut)
Our first pick for a first-time coordinator. Bhagalpur or Bangalore silk, plain body, gold zari border, no floral print. Holds pleats when you sit cross-legged, drapes sharp on the walk to the lift lobby, photographs true-red in the common-room tubelight. Total set with blouse ₹2,500 to ₹3,900.
2. Lighter red silk-cotton blend for a warm Delhi October (₹1,800 to ₹2,600 per 5.5 metre cut)
A pure silk from 6 AM to 11 AM in a warm Delhi Ghatasthapana is genuinely uncomfortable. A silk-cotton blend at 60/40 or 70/30 keeps the red-silk register with 40 per cent of the weight. Drapes closer to the body and does not trap sweat during the six-hour cycle. Total set with blouse ₹2,100 to ₹3,000.
3. Dyeable chanderi in a custom red shade (₹1,100 to ₹1,700 per 5.5 metre cut, plus dye)
The comfort-first option. Chanderi is a cotton-silk mix, drapes closer to the body than heavy silk, breathes better, and sits well in photos. Order the dye a week ahead so the exact scarlet or blood-red matches the aunties' saris. Total set with blouse and dye ₹1,700 to ₹2,400.
4. Kanjivaram-style red silk (₹4,500 to ₹8,500 per 5.5 metre cut)
For the coordinator whose role also includes a family satyanarayan puja at home in the evening. Beautiful, heavy, holds its shape, but does not fold well for prolonged floor-sitting. Only pick this if you have a chair for the kalash aarti or if your Ghatasthapana is a stand-and-walk ceremony rather than a sit-and-chant one. Total set with blouse ₹5,000 to ₹9,200.
3 mistakes that spoil a Ghatasthapana coordinator saree
Mistake 1: Wearing maroon or wine-red instead of a clean blood-red
Warm red is the traditional shade for Ghatasthapana. Maroon reads more festive than devotional, wine reads party. Stick to a clean scarlet or blood-red for the coordinator role. Save the maroon for Ashtami on 10 October and the wine for Diwali evening in November.
Mistake 2: Stitching a zipper-back or dori-back blouse for a floor-sitting role
Zippers pop open when you sit cross-legged and bend. Dori-backs need someone to tie them, and you will not have a spare pair of hands on Ghatasthapana morning. Stitch a hook-and-eye back with three hooks minimum. Do the trial in the exact bra and jewellery you will wear.
Mistake 3: Ordering the aunties' sarees from three different bolts
If seven or eight women from the wing are all going to be in red on Ghatasthapana morning, they should be in the SAME red. Different dye lots read as three different shades in the tower group photo. Put in a small bulk order out of one bolt. Our wholesale page handles bulk fabric requests with a per-metre concession, and the counter staff have done Navratri society orders before.

The blouse and small logistics for Ghatasthapana morning
Stitch the blouse with:
- High round neck, three-quarter sleeve
- Hook-and-eye back, three hooks minimum, no zipper, no dori
- Same red fabric as the saree, cut from the same bolt for a matched shade
- Full canvas lining at the waistband so the pleats sit flat
Small logistics no one tells first-time coordinators:
- Get saree stitched and fall-and-pico'd by 30 September, NOT 2 October
- Full trial drape on 1 October in the exact jewellery you will wear
- Pin the pallu in three places, not one, so it stays put when you bend for the kalash
- Closed-toe juttis, not open sandals, you will be near a diya for two hours
- Keep a plain white cotton dupatta in the pooja room for when the panditji asks you to cover your head
Questions first-time coordinators ask us at the counter
Is maroon fine instead of red for Ghatasthapana?
Warm red is the traditional shade for the first day of Sharad Navratri. Maroon reads more festive than devotional. Stick to a clean scarlet or blood-red for the coordinator role. Save the maroon saree for Ashtami or Navami.
Can I wear silk if I have to sit cross-legged for two hours?
Yes, if it is a soft pure silk, not a heavy Kanjivaram. Kanjivaram is beautiful but stiff, and it does not fold well for prolonged sitting. A plain-woven silk from Bhagalpur or Bangalore works better for this role. A dyeable chanderi is even easier if you want comfort first.
How do I check the red shade in the WhatsApp photo the store sends me?
You cannot. Shade on a screen is unreliable. Ask the store to hold three rolls in three shades of red aside for you, then walk in and see them under daylight. Fifteen minutes will save you two weeks of regret. Book an appointment and the floor staff will have three or four rolls ready before you arrive.
What jewellery pairs with a red silk coordinator saree?
A single gold neckpiece, medium chandbalis, thin gold bangles on one wrist, and a red bindi. Nothing more. You are coordinating, not walking in a wedding. Save the heavy set for the Ashtami puja on 10 October or the Dussehra evening on 12 October.
How do I order eight matching sarees for the aunties helping me?
Small bulk order out of a single bolt for a matched dye lot. Give the counter the count, the exact shade, and the delivery date. Two weeks' notice is comfortable. Details on our wholesale enquiry page. Small bulk quantities go on retail pricing with a per-metre concession, which we can confirm on a call.
My saas wants me to wear her old red silk from her wedding. Should I?
If it fits and it is in good condition, yes. It reads better in the aunties' eyes than a brand new saree, and it saves you a shopping trip in the middle of Ghatasthapana week. Get it dry-cleaned by 25 September and do the trial drape on 1 October.
