Uthradam is next Tuesday. Thiruvonam is next Wednesday. You still have not picked the kasavu. Happens every year. Rakhi passes, sudden realisation, phone starts ringing at the shop by Sunday morning.

Not a disaster. Not yet. You have six full working days. That is enough for cotton, not enough for a stitched blouse from scratch. So the plan changes.

Buy this week, stitch minimal, drape the rest. Simple.

Here is exactly how to move day-by-day, what to pick, and where the karigar bottleneck actually is.

Quick Answer: With six days to Uthradam, buy your Onam kasavu by Friday, hand blouse to karigar by Saturday morning, collect Tuesday evening. Pick 60s or 80s Kerala cotton with half-inch to one-inch kasavu, GSM 90 to 110, cream base. Skip anything needing new blouse stitching after Sunday. Delhi retail sits between Rs. 1,400 and Rs. 3,200 for cotton kasavu, Rs. 3,500 and Rs. 6,500 for tissue kasavu.

What is actually possible in six working days

Let me be straight. Six days does not mean you can do anything. Some choices are still open, some are closed.

Still open. Buying the fabric. Getting a ready-piece blouse in matching cream. Basic drape practice. Small border fall-hemming. Same-day pickup from Lajpat Nagar if you live in Delhi NCR.

Almost closed. Custom-stitched fitted blouse with piping and hooks. Karigars in Lajpat Nagar are already booked for Onam orders since Aug 10. You may get a slot only if you walk in with fabric by Saturday morning.

Fully closed. Handloom pieces ordered from Balaramapuram or Chendamangalam. Shipping from Kerala takes 5 to 7 days minimum, and today is Wednesday. Not happening in time.

So the buying zone is narrower than most people realise. Kerala cotton kasavu that is already sitting on Delhi shelves. Nothing that has to travel.

The day-by-day plan I give walk-in customers

Today or tomorrow (Wed-Thu). Come see the fabric. Feel three or four bolts. Do not order online blind unless you have bought from that shop before. Kasavu shade varies by 3 or 4 tones between shops, and photos lie.

Friday. Lock the fabric. Pay in full. Carry it home. Do not wait for weekend to decide, karigars start closing their books Friday evening.

Saturday morning. Blouse piece to karigar. Ask specifically for kasavu-border blouse fall, not plain. Six-day turnaround is possible if you go Saturday, not Monday.

Sunday. Rest day. Or shop for jewellery, bindi, chappal. The kasavu shop is closed for us anyway.

Monday. First trial of blouse. Small alterations only.

Tuesday (Uthradam eve). Final pickup. Iron. Fold with muslin. Sleep.

Wednesday (Thiruvonam). Drape. Sadya. Family group photo.

This is the schedule. Anything slower is risky.

1. 60s cotton kasavu with half-inch border

The everyday pick. Fine 60-count Kerala cotton. Cream base leaning to warm ivory. Half-inch kasavu, machine-woven, holds crisp on Delhi humidity. Rs. 1,400 to Rs. 1,750 in our shop this week.

2. 80s cotton with three-quarter kasavu

The step-up. Softer hand-feel, slightly finer weave, kasavu sits slightly deeper on the border. Good for a family gathering where cousins will notice the fabric quality.

Rs. 1,850 to Rs. 2,300. Same karigar turnaround. This is the pick I recommend for first-year working women who want something better than college-days cotton.

3. Tissue kasavu saree (silk-cotton blend)

Tissue kasavu is what most Malayali brides wear for the first Onam after wedding. Cotton warp, silk weft. Slight sheen, kasavu border deeper, drape falls beautifully.

Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 6,500 depending on kasavu depth and border width. Available in our tissue collection online, but for six-day buying, walk-in is safer.

4. Ready-cut mundu-neriyathu set (no stitching needed)

For elderly mother-in-law, grandmother, or if karigar timing feels tight. Two ready pieces, already hemmed, already washed. Just drape. Blouse can be pulled from her existing wardrobe.

Rs. 1,900 to Rs. 2,700 for a proper set. Zero stitching stress. This is the safest six-day pick, honestly.

5. Kasavu with contrast blouse fabric

Fabric shop trick. You buy the kasavu saree, and instead of stitching a matching cream blouse in six days (tight), you pair it with a ready contrast blouse. Maroon, dark green, deep peacock.

Younger crowd loves this. Elders sometimes raise eyebrow, but the tradition allows it. Contrast blouse also solves the "no time for stitching" problem cleanly.

Common mistakes in the last-week rush

Ordering online from a first-time seller. Photos lie. Kasavu shade lies. Delivery may slip. If it is your first time buying from a shop, walk in. Six days is not the week for gamble.

Choosing broad-border because it looks fancy in photos. One-and-quarter-inch kasavu needs a taller frame and confident drape. Under time pressure, half-inch is safer.

Skipping the wash-shrinkage question. Kerala cotton can shrink 3 to 5 percent on first wash. If you plan to wash before wearing, add 15 to 20 cm to the length. If you plan to steam-iron only, current length is fine.

Handing fabric to karigar on Monday. Sunday is off. Monday morning drops the delivery to Wednesday afternoon at earliest. Your drape starts at 10 AM Wednesday. Do not risk it.

Buying kasavu for grandmother without checking her weight preference. Older ladies often prefer 90 GSM soft cotton, not the crisper 110 GSM festive weight. Ask before you gift.

Cream base with gold kasavu. Non-negotiable for traditional families. Bone cream or warm ivory, never chalk white.

If the family is modern, cream base with silver kasavu is acceptable. It is called kasavu-silver line in Kerala. Rare, slightly striking, still traditional.

For young unmarried daughters, off-white with narrow kasavu is fine. For young married women in their first Onam, tissue kasavu is the smarter pick. For elders, soft washed cotton with half-inch kasavu is safest.

Never gift a coloured base saree for Onam. Cream and gold, or cream and silver. That is the code.

Can I really finish blouse stitching in three days?

Yes, but only if you go Saturday morning with fabric in hand. Ask the karigar to confirm the pickup day before you pay. Do not assume.

Is same-day delivery to Gurgaon possible from Lajpat Nagar?

Same-day pickup yes if you come to the shop by 4 PM. Same-day courier to Gurgaon or Noida depends on courier slot, usually next-day safe.

What if the karigar cannot take the order?

Do I really need a matching petticoat too?

For kasavu saree, yes. Cream cotton petticoat, not white. Rs. 350 to 450 for a decent one. Do not skip.

How much extra fabric should I buy for a kasavu blouse if I want puff sleeves?
