Pitru Paksha Begins Today: The New Bahu's First Sasural Shraddh Cotton Saree Guide
Fabric Guides · 6 minute read · Updated 18 September 2026
The saree the new bahu wears when the sasu maa hands her the kitchen for the family tithi. Plain cream cotton, right border, straight talk from the counter.
Priya walked in on a Thursday afternoon with a folded chit in her hand. First shraddh at her sasural. Family tithi in six days.
One fabric brief:
Cream, not pure white.
Comfortable for four hours in a hot kitchen.
Nothing that reads festive.
Bright pink georgette from her trousseau? Wrong register. A gold-zari saree from the wedding? Too loud. Silk-blend from a friend? Too warm to cook in. Answer: plain cream cotton with a thin maroon border.
Why cream cotton is the honest shraddh answer:
- Reads respectful without reading widow-white to the sasural
- Breathes through four hours of kitchen work and pandit-serving
- Washes at home the same evening, ready for the next family shraddh
Quick answer: Pitru Paksha 2026 runs 18 September to 2 October. For a first sasural shraddh, pick plain cream cotton (₹520 to ₹640) or ivory cotton-chanderi (₹740 to ₹940) for a 6.3 metre cut. Blouse cloth ₹120 to ₹190 extra.
When cream cotton works for a shraddh day, and when to skip
Cream cotton is our first suggestion for any first-time daughter-in-law hosting the family shraddh. The cotton breathes through the four-hour kitchen shift, the cream reads respectful in most north Indian sasurals, and the thin border keeps the saree from looking bridal-widowish. Our full cotton fabric collection carries the cream, off-white, ivory and pale beige base cuts across the ₹520 to ₹940 range with three border options.
Where cream cotton is the wrong pick? A very traditional sasural that specifically asks for pure white with no border. In that case, a plain pure white cotton with a fine cream or beige border is the right register instead. Ask your sasu maa first, one quick question saves a big awkwardness on the day.
Cream cotton also skips for the sangeet or the reception of a family wedding happening the same week. Different day, different register. Keep the shraddh cream cotton folded on its own shelf.

1. Plain cream cotton with a one-inch maroon border (₹520 to ₹640 per 6.3 metre cut)
Our first pick for the new bahu who has never bought a shraddh saree before. Cream body reads clean and calm, thin maroon border keeps it from looking widow-white. Cotton breathes in the September Delhi kitchen and washes at home in cold water. Total set with blouse ₹640 to ₹800. Best all-rounder for nine sasurals out of ten.
2. Off-white cotton with a small mustard-thread pallu motif (₹620 to ₹780 per 6.3 metre cut)
A shade warmer than option one. The mustard-thread pallu reads gentler if the sasural is on the traditional side. Works well if the sasu maa herself will be in the kitchen with you for the day. Total set with blouse ₹760 to ₹960.
3. Ivory cotton-chanderi with a hand-woven cream border (₹740 to ₹940 per 6.3 metre cut)
The cotton-chanderi blend drapes softer than plain cotton and photographs beautifully if the family takes a group picture after the shraddh meal. A gentle step up in cloth without stepping out of register. Total set with blouse ₹900 to ₹1,130.
4. Pale beige cotton with a very fine gold-tissue thread border (₹660 to ₹860 per 6.3 metre cut)
For the bahu whose sasu maa says "beta, thoda gold border chal jayega, hamare ghar mein aisa hi chalta hai." Every family reads the border differently. Ask before you buy. Total set with blouse ₹810 to ₹1,040.
3 mistakes that spoil a first sasural shraddh saree
Mistake 1: Buying pure bright white cotton with no border
Most north Indian sasural households read pure bright white as widow-white. The sasu maa will politely ask the new bahu to change before the pandit arrives. Cream avoids that entirely. If the family specifically asks for white, add a thin cream or beige border and skip the pure blank white.
Mistake 2: Picking a heavy cotton-silk blend or a silk saree
The kitchen is hot, the pandit sits for an hour, the meal service is another hour. A heavy silk-blend traps sweat and reads too festive for the day. Plain cotton wins on both counts. Save the silk-blend for Diwali evening in November.
Mistake 3: Skipping the matching blouse cut on the same visit
A cream saree with a random pink blouse from the wedding trousseau breaks the register. The community will notice, even if nobody says a word. Take the matching 0.8 metre blouse cut on the same visit for ₹120 to ₹190, and the set is complete.

Colour and style guide for a first sasural shraddh
Wear on a shraddh day:
- Cream, the honest first choice
- Off-white, only very slightly warmer than cream
- Ivory, the softest option, drapes beautifully in cotton-chanderi
- Pale beige, warm-cream register
- Cream with a maroon, mustard or thin gold-tissue border
Do not wear on a shraddh day:
- Pure bright white with no border (widow-white register)
- Red, maroon, orange, hot pink (festive register)
- Black (never on any puja day)
- Sequins, heavy zari, mirror-work, kundan borders (wedding register)
- Prints with peacocks, elephants, floral bouquets (festive symbolism)
What to pair with the saree:
- Plain matching blouse in the same cream or off-white cotton
- Small gold stud earrings, thin gold chain, single ring
- Bare feet inside the puja area, plain leather chappals on the balcony
- Hair in a low bun with a plain hair pin, no floral gajra
Questions new bahus ask us at the counter
When does Pitru Paksha 2026 end?
Pitru Paksha 2026 runs from Friday, 18 September to Thursday, 2 October (Sarva Pitru Amavasya). Each family observes the tithi of the departed elder, so ask your sasu maa which day the household observes.
Can I wear a cotton salwar suit instead of a saree for the shraddh?
Yes, in many households a plain cream or off-white cotton suit with a matching dupatta is fully acceptable, especially if the bahu is not yet comfortable in a saree for four hours in a hot kitchen. Ask your sasu maa first.
What if my sasural is more traditional and asks for pure white?
Then plain pure white cotton with a thin cream or beige border is the correct choice. Skip pure bright white with no border, and skip anything with even a small maroon or gold thread if the family reads that as festive.
Can I wear a saree from my wedding trousseau?
Only if you have a plain cream or ivory saree in it. Bright colours, red borders, and heavy zari from a wedding trousseau are not right for a shraddh day. Buy a fresh cut and it will serve you for the next fifteen family shraddhs. Kitna metre lagega? 6.3 metres body plus 0.8 metres blouse.
How do I wash and store the saree after the day?
Cold water hand wash with mild liquid soap, no bleach ever. Rinse three times, dry indoors on a shaded balcony (direct sun yellows cream in three washes). Iron on medium heat, store folded flat with a cotton kerchief between the folds. Air out every three months. Stored right, cream cotton lasts eight to ten years.
What is the total budget including tailoring for the shraddh saree set?
Fabric ₹640 to ₹1,130 for the saree and blouse cuts. Fall-and-pico ₹100 to ₹130 done in a day. Blouse stitching ₹250 to ₹350 for basic finishing. Petticoat cloth ₹140 to ₹190 if not already owned. Total ₹1,130 to ₹1,800 for a full first-shraddh set. Boutique owners restocking multiple cream cotton bases can check our wholesale rates for 15 to 20 percent savings on 5 plus metres per order.
