Velvet Fabric for Wedding Guests 2026: Jacket, Blouse and Kurta Pieces for a December Delhi Season

Occasion Guides · Published 26 October 2026 · Updated 26 October 2026 · By the Paras Gallery Fabrics counter team, Lajpat Nagar II, New Delhi

Three or four December weddings on the calendar and no wish to sweat inside a full velvet lehenga? Our answer is velvet fabric for wedding guests in smaller pieces: a jacket, a blouse, a yoke or a border.

Velvet Jacket PiecesWedding Guest LayeringDecember Delhi Weddings

The short version: A velvet jacket over a georgette or net suit covers a cold farmhouse night and comes off in a warm hall. A velvet blouse turns a chiffon saree into a winter look. Buy 10 to 15 percent extra for the pile.

Quick answer: The best velvet fabric for wedding guests is a partial piece. Choose micro velvet for a jacket and silk velvet for a blouse or yoke, then add 10 to 15 percent for the pile. The velvet fabric collection has 175 live fabrics across these weights. Pair them with a georgette base. For a pile check, book a counter slot and we will set it up.

Key facts at a glance

  • Guests get the most from velvet as a jacket, blouse, yoke or border.
  • Micro velvet suits jackets. Silk velvet suits blouses and yokes.
  • A long jacket takes 2.75 to 3.25 metres. A blouse takes 1 to 1.25 metres.
  • Add 10 to 15 percent so every panel is cut with the pile one way.
  • Steam velvet from the wrong side. Never iron it.
  • Buy by 2 November so the tailor has it before Diwali.

Why does velvet fabric for wedding guests work best as a partial piece?

Velvet works best for a wedding guest as a jacket, blouse, yoke or border. A full velvet lehenga is heavy and warm, which suits a bride on a cold stage more than a guest on the dance floor.

Chhatarpur farmhouse lawns turn cold after 9 pm, so a knee length jacket covers your arms and back.

How much velvet do you need for a jacket, blouse or yoke?

A short velvet jacket needs about 1.75 to 2 metres of 44 inch fabric for an average size. A long jacket takes 2.75 to 3.25 metres. Add 10 to 15 percent to every number for the pile.

  • Blouse with elbow sleeves: 1 to 1.25 metres.
  • Kurta yoke with cuffs: 0.5 to 0.75 metre.
  • Dupatta or hem border: 0.5 metre, cut into 3 to 4 inch strips.

Which velvet suits a wedding guest: micro, silk or embroidered?

Micro velvet is the best pick for a wedding guest jacket because it holds its shape. Silk velvet suits a soft blouse or yoke. Embroidered velvet belongs on small panels.

Velvet type Feel and weight Rough price Best piece Care
Micro velvet Usually polyester. Short dense pile, medium weight Roughly Rs 350 to Rs 750 a metre Short or long jacket, 1.75 to 3.25 metres Barely crushes. Steam the wrong side
Silk velvet Often a viscose and silk blend. Thin, light, falls close Roughly Rs 900 to Rs 1,800 a metre Blouse, 1 to 1.25 metres, or yoke, 0.5 to 0.75 metre Marks easily. Carry on a hanger
Embroidered velvet Zari or dabka work adds weight fast Roughly Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,800 a metre Jacket edges or cuffs, about 0.5 metre Keep off the shoulders

Sheerness and lining under velvet

Velvet is opaque, so the base can stay sheer. Line a net suit fabric from bust to hip in matching shantoon and leave the sleeves unlined.

How do you cut and steam velvet without crushing the pile?

Velvet must be cut with every panel facing one pile direction, or a sleeve shows a different shade under stage lights. Steam velvet from the wrong side and never iron it, because an iron flattens the pile into a shiny mark.

Run your palm down the cloth. The smooth way looks lighter, the rough way deeper. That is the nap. Cutting "with nap" eats the extra 10 to 15 percent.

Allow 10 to 14 days for a plain jacket and about three weeks for embroidered work.

From the boutique side: velvet layers slide under the needle, so tailors around Lajpat Nagar often charge more for it and fill up fast. Book the tailor first, then buy the cloth.

Can one velvet jacket work across four weddings?

One velvet jacket can cover four weddings if you change the base under it each time.

Our Lajpat Nagar II counter plan at Paras Gallery Fabrics for four weddings between 2 and 12 December:

  • Farmhouse night: ivory net suit under a long bottle green velvet jacket.
  • Banquet hall: dusty rose chiffon saree with a wine silk velvet blouse.
  • Day wedding: georgette kurta with a velvet yoke and dupatta border.
  • Reception: the same green jacket over a champagne georgette or gold tissue suit.

What velvet mistakes do wedding guests make?

The three velvet mistakes we see most are buying exact metres, ironing at home and an embroidered jacket over an embroidered suit.

A second dye lot rarely matches. A hot iron leaves a lasting shine. Keep only one layer embroidered.

When should you buy velvet for the December wedding muhurats?

Buy wedding velvet by 2 November so the tailor has it before Diwali on 8 November. That leaves time for two fittings before the December vivah muhurats.

  • By 2 Nov: Check pile and colour in daylight. Buy with 15 percent extra.
  • By 6 Nov: Hand fabric to the tailor before Diwali on 8 November.
  • Around 20 Nov: Devutthana Ekadashi on Friday 20 November, per DekhoPanchang, opens the season. First fitting.
  • By 28 Nov: Final fitting.
  • 2 to 6 and 11 to 12 Dec: Vivah muhurat dates per the SmartPuja panchang list. Confirm with your family pandit.

The real questions buyers ask

Is velvet too hot for an indoor Delhi wedding?

Velvet is too hot for an indoor Delhi wedding only as a full outfit. A velvet blouse, yoke or border stays comfortable in a heated banquet hall. Save the long jacket for open lawns. If the venue has both, wear a short jacket you can take off at the table.

How much velvet do I need for a long jacket?

A long velvet jacket needs about 2.75 to 3.25 metres of 44 inch velvet for an average size. Add 10 to 15 percent so the tailor can cut every panel with the pile one way. Buy the satin or butter crepe lining at the same time. Above size 40, send us your measurements so we can check the metres first.

Which velvet fabric for wedding jackets holds up best?

Micro velvet holds up best for a wedding jacket. Its short, dense pile keeps a jacket shape, blocks wind on an open lawn and barely crushes in the car. Keep embroidery to the edges and cuffs so the shoulders stay light through a long night.

Can I wear the same velvet jacket to two weddings?

Yes, you can wear the same velvet jacket to two weddings if you change the base under it. Bottle green works over an ivory net suit one night and champagne georgette the next. Deep shades like wine, navy or bottle green sit well over most light bases and hide small marks.
