Rajputana Wedding in Delhi: What the Groom's Chachi Wears for the Haldi Ceremony (December 2026)

Wedding Guides · 8 minute read · Updated 21 September 2026

The chachi's haldi lehenga. Mustard or burnt-orange jacquard. Kalidar ghera. Gota edging on all four sides of the chunari. Borla at the forehead.

The groom's chachi has a very specific role at a Rajputana haldi.

She sits beside the groom. Ties the kalava. Hands over the coconut. Ends up in most of the tightly-framed photographs.

Bride's mother is #1 in the photos. Chachi is #2. That's a lot of visibility for a role most sisters-in-law only find out they have three weeks before the wedding.

Why jacquard is the underrated answer for a chachi at haldi:

  • Pattern woven INTO the fabric, so nothing sheds into the haldi paste
  • Holds up to floor-sitting for two hours and mausis' group-dance pulls
  • Warmer than georgette for a Delhi December haldi lawn ceremony
Quick answer: For a Delhi Rajputana December 2026 wedding, the groom's chachi wears a mustard or burnt-orange jacquard lehenga (₹4,500 to ₹9,500 for 5 metre ghera + choli + 2.5 metre chunari) with gota edging on all four sides of the chunari. Kalidar cut, high waistband, hook-and-eye choli.

What the community expects: heavy but not bridal

Chachi is family. Not the bride's mother. Heavy fabric, but never bridal.

Rajputana jewel palette: deep maroon, rich green, peacock blue, burnt orange.

Never wear:

  • The bride's red
  • Plain white, cream, or grey
  • The bride's mother's exact shade (family WhatsApp coordination essential)

For haldi specifically: yellow, orange, mustard, turmeric-gold. For a chachi, saturated mustard or burnt-orange jacquard hits the mark. Festive enough for haldi. Heavy enough for the aunty role. Not bridal.

The 4 lehenga options we recommend for a Rajputana haldi chachi

1. Mustard-yellow jacquard with woven ambi buti (₹5,800 to ₹8,500 for full set)

Our first pick. Kalidar (panel-cut) mustard jacquard with a small woven ambi buti reads festive without shouting. Pattern is woven in, no sequin shedding into the haldi paste. Chunari in the same shade with gota edging. Total set (5m ghera + choli + 2.5m chunari + gota) ₹5,800 to ₹8,500.

2. Burnt-orange jacquard with a peacock motif border (₹6,200 to ₹9,500 for full set)

A step warmer and slightly heavier. Burnt-orange reads matriarchal in the group photograph. Peacock motif is auspicious across Rajputana communities. Best for a farmhouse or hotel-lawn haldi where photos will be posed formally. Total set ₹6,200 to ₹9,500.

3. Saffron-and-gold silk-jacquard blend (₹4,500 to ₹7,200 for full set)

The comfort-first option. Silk-jacquard blend drapes lighter than pure jacquard but reads the same in photographs. Best if the haldi is very early morning or if the chachi is on the older side and cannot manage full jacquard weight for two hours. Total set ₹4,500 to ₹7,200.

4. Turmeric-gold imperial brocade for a bigger farmhouse wedding (₹7,500 to ₹12,500 for full set)

For a very large Rajputana wedding at a farmhouse or five-star. Imperial brocade reads step above regular jacquard. Only pick this if the family style is grand and the chachi role is genuinely central to the ceremony. Otherwise stick with option one or two. Total set ₹7,500 to ₹12,500.

3 mistakes that spoil a chachi's haldi lehenga

Mistake 1: Wearing red or the bride's colour

Red is the bride's colour and it reads confusing at the haldi. Warm shades adjacent to red (deep orange, rani pink, wine) are acceptable ONLY if the bride is in yellow for the haldi. Coordinate with the bride's mother first via a WhatsApp shade swap.

Mistake 2: Circular ghera instead of kalidar

Modern designer lehengas often use a circular ghera. Rajputana tradition asks for kalidar (panel-cut) so the pleats sit right when the chachi bends for the aarti. Tell your tailor kalidar, 4.5 to 5 metres, and 20 to 24 panels.

Mistake 3: Skipping gota edging on the chunari

Gota edging on ALL four sides (not just two) is what reads "senior aunty" in the photograph. This adds ₹800 to ₹1,600 to the total and takes an extra two days. Do it. The photos will exist for 40 years.

The lehenga cut, the chunari, the choli, the borla

Stitch the lehenga with:

  • Ghera 4.5 to 5 metres, kalidar (panel-cut), 20 to 24 panels
  • Length ankle-covering, NOT floor-sweeping, so you do not step on it during aarti
  • High waistband with canvas lining so the jacquard weight does not drag
  • Cotton petticoat lining underneath, sewn separately

Stitch the choli with:

  • Three-quarter sleeve, high round neck, Rajputana back (three hooks, not a plunging back)
  • Same jacquard as the lehenga OR plain matching silk-cotton for contrast
  • Canvas lining at the bust and waist

The chunari (odhni):

  • Length 2.5 metres, width full 44 inches
  • Same jacquard as the lehenga in a slightly deeper OR lighter shade for contrast
  • Gota edging on ALL four sides, not just two
  • Draped over the head from the front, pinned at the shoulder, falling to ankle at the back

Jewellery and borla:

  • Smaller borla than the bride, medium size
  • Heavy rakhdi (side hair pin), medium chandbalis, rani haar or heavy choker
  • Stacked kadas on both wrists
  • Anklets optional but Rajputana tradition prefers them for haldi

The December cold problem

Delhi December is genuinely cold at haldi timings. Haldi is usually a late-morning or afternoon ceremony held in an open courtyard, farmhouse lawn, or hotel poolside. Between 11 AM and 2 PM the sun helps. Before or after that, the temperature drops fast.

A jacquard lehenga is warmer than a georgette. That is another reason it wins for December weddings specifically. If the haldi is very early morning or after sunset, add a fine wool shawl in a matching shade. Skip the pashmina, it looks casual for the haldi.

Timing map from today to a mid-December wedding

Today is 21 September. December wedding muhurats start around 4 December 2026 and run through mid-December.

  • By 30 September: confirm the wedding date and haldi timing with the family
  • By 10 October: shortlist jacquard shade at the store
  • By 20 October: buy the fabric, drop at tailor for lehenga stitching
  • By 15 November: first trial with the chunari draped and gota-edged
  • By 25 November: second trial in the full jewellery you will wear
  • By 2 December: ironed, hung, packed if the wedding is out-of-Delhi

Not sure how much jacquard you need for a full 5-metre ghera plus choli plus 2.5-metre chunari? Our fabric estimator page walks you through the maths in three inputs.

Questions Rajputana chachis ask us at the counter

Can the chachi wear a saree instead of a lehenga for a Rajputana haldi?

Traditionally, no. Rajputana community weddings expect the chachi and the mausi of the groom in a lehenga-chunari at haldi. Saree is acceptable for the sangeet and the wedding itself, not for the haldi ceremony.

What is the difference between a chunari and a dupatta?

A chunari is heavier, wider, and draped over the head from the front. A dupatta is lighter and worn across the shoulders or over one shoulder. The Rajputana tradition asks for a chunari at haldi, with gota edging on all four sides.

Can I wear red as the chachi?

No. Red is the bride's colour and it reads confusing at the haldi. Warm shades adjacent to red (deep orange, rani pink, wine) are acceptable if the bride is in yellow. Coordinate with the bride's mother first before you finalise the shade.

My bhatija's wedding is on a working weekday. Can I wear a lighter lehenga?

Yes, if the haldi is a small home ceremony. If it is at a farmhouse or a hotel with 100-plus guests, go with the full jacquard. The photographs will exist for 40 years. Also see our bridal-bliss lehenga range for coordinated family looks.

Can I use a georgette lehenga if the jacquard is too heavy?

For a chachi role at a Rajputana wedding, jacquard is the community-appropriate answer. If jacquard feels heavy, ask the tailor for a soft jacquard blend (silk-jacquard or georgette-jacquard) that drapes lighter but reads the same in photographs.

How do I coordinate with the mausi and the bride's mother without matching?

Tonal coordination. The store can pull three or four sarees and lehengas in the same tonal family (all warm, or all jewel) with different bases so no two aunties are in the same fabric. Ask for a coordinated aunty pull when you book the appointment. Or come with the mausi on the same visit and pick together.

Ready to buy for your bhatija's haldi?

Come to the Central Market, Lajpat Nagar counter with the bride's mother's fabric swatch and your choli measurement. Bring the mausi too if she is in town. Book a slot so a coordinated aunty pull is ready when you arrive.

Or WhatsApp us at +91 96544 40254 with a picture of the bride's mother's outfit swatch and the wedding date. Shop team will pull four coordinated jacquard rolls within an hour. For yardage help see the fabric estimator page.
