Dussehra 2026 Family Ravan Dahan Evening: The Green-and-Gold Silk-Cotton Saree For The Ramlila Maidan (12 October 2026)
Fabric Guides · 7 minute read · Updated 22 September 2026
The family evening saree for Dussehra. Emerald or bottle green. Fine gold zari. Cotton-silk mix that breathes on a crowded maidan.
Dussehra 2026 is Monday 12 October. Vijayadashami. The tenth day of Navratri.
The whole family walks to the local Ramlila maidan. Sixty-foot Ravan effigy goes up in flame around 7:30 pm.
Two kids in tow. Husband parking the car three streets away. Sasu-maa carrying a small thali of sweets for the neighbours.
The mother's saree has to sit through all of it. The walk. The two-hour stand. The drifting ash once Ravan lights up.
Not a heavy silk day.
Why green-and-gold silk-cotton is the Dussehra maidan answer:
- Green reads victory (Ram's colour on Dussehra), gold catches the effigy-fire glow
- Silk-cotton mix survives the maidan crowd, the smoke drift, the kids tugging
- Photographs beautifully in the family group frame that always gets taken with the effigy behind
Quick answer: Dussehra 2026 is Monday 12 October. For a family Ramlila-maidan evening, buy emerald or bottle-green silk-cotton with a gold zari border (₹1,300 to ₹2,400) or handloom cotton with a fine gold-tissue border (₹880 to ₹1,600) for a 5.5 metre cut. Skip pure red on this specific evening — save that for Karva Chauth 18 days later.
Why green-and-gold is the Vijayadashami register
Every festival has a colour code, and the elders in the colony absolutely notice when it slips:
- Navratri Day 1 → red or yellow
- Sharad Purnima (25 Oct) → ivory and gold
- Karva Chauth (30 Oct) → deep red
- Dussehra (12 Oct) → green, bottle green, emerald, with gold zari
Green is Ram's colour on Vijayadashami. It also happens to be the colour of shami leaves that families exchange after the effigy burn as a sign of good fortune. And on a practical level, an emerald or bottle-green base photographs better than a bright red against a flame-lit sky at 7:30 pm.
Save the red for Karva Chauth. Save the ivory for Sharad Purnima. Wear the green on Dussehra and everything sits right in the family album.

Browse Cotton Fabrics →The 4 options for the Dussehra maidan mother
1. Emerald green silk-cotton with a gold zari border (₹1,300 to ₹2,400 per 5.5 metre cut)
Our first pick. Emerald reads clearly in the group photo, gold zari catches the effigy-fire glow in the frame the family will take at 7:35 pm. Silk-cotton is comfortable through the walk to the ground and back. Total set with blouse ₹1,600 to ₹2,900.
2. Bottle-green handloom cotton with a fine gold-tissue border (₹880 to ₹1,600 per 5.5 metre cut)
The everyday-mother option. Handloom cotton in a bottle green feels rooted, breathes well, and holds a gold-tissue border without going into wedding register. Perfect for the mother who walked from the colony gate to the maidan on foot with two kids. Total set with blouse ₹1,050 to ₹1,900.
3. Forest-green dyeable chanderi with a fine silver-gold border (₹1,500 to ₹2,600 per 5.5 metre cut)
For the mother who prefers a slightly softer green and a lighter drape. Chanderi's characteristic sheen photographs beautifully in the golden-hour before the effigy is lit, and the cotton-silk mix stays comfortable through the two-hour stand. Custom-dyeable if the colony has agreed on a specific green over the family WhatsApp. Total set with blouse ₹1,800 to ₹3,000.
4. Off-white chikankari cotton with green-thread work (₹1,400 to ₹2,200 per 5.5 metre cut)
For the mother who does not wear strong colours but still wants to honour the Dussehra register. Chikankari's fine green-on-white thread work reads intentional across generations. Neighbours read it as "she is dressed for the day" without shouting the colour. Total set with blouse ₹1,700 to ₹2,600.
3 mistakes that spoil a Dussehra maidan saree
Mistake 1: Wearing full red because "festive means red"
Vijayadashami is not a red day. Green is Ram's colour, and every neighbourhood aunty at the maidan will register the mismatch even if nobody says anything out loud. Karva Chauth is 18 days later, and that IS a red day. Wear red then. Wear green now.
Mistake 2: Wearing a full silk saree that catches the effigy ash
Ravan Dahan is a real bonfire. Ash drifts. Sparks travel. A heavy silk with an open zari border catches loose ash and shows dark smudges the next morning. Silk-cotton, handloom cotton and chanderi are all easier to clean if a bit of ash lands on the pallu.
Mistake 3: Not thinking about the walking distance
Delhi families park two to three streets away from a big Ramlila maidan because the roads close from 5 pm. That's a 400 to 800 metre walk on both legs of the trip. A stiff Kanjivaram silk or a heavily-embroidered lehenga-saree makes that walk uncomfortable, especially with a child holding your hand. A silk-cotton or handloom cotton solves this at fabric level.

Questions Dussehra mothers ask us at the counter
Can I wear yellow or orange instead of green for Dussehra?
Mustard yellow works if the family is going in the afternoon before the effigy is lit, because yellow is a Navratri Day 1 leftover colour and Dussehra is technically Day 10. Bright orange is trickier and reads more Ram Navami than Dussehra. If in doubt, green is the safest bet for the maidan evening itself.
Is the sasu-maa expected to wear green too?
Not required, but if the family group photograph is important, coordinating on the green register across two generations reads polished. The sasu-maa can wear a deeper bottle green or a green-and-gold Banarasi register, one visible step senior to the mother's emerald silk-cotton.
What do the kids wear?
Boys typically get a simple green kurta or a mustard kurta with a green Nehru jacket. Girls get a green anarkali or a green lehenga-choli. Match the mother's green tone across the two kids and the family reads as one visual unit in the effigy-fire group photo.
Can I wear a saree with sequins or heavy work?
Skip heavy sequins for this evening. Sequin catches ash and smoke, and the register at a Ramlila maidan is neighbourhood-warm, not wedding-glam. Save the sequin saree for Diwali card party evening three weeks later.
What is the total budget including tailoring?
Fabric ₹880 to ₹2,600 for the saree and blouse cuts depending on option. Fall-and-pico ₹120 to ₹150 done in two days. Blouse stitching ₹300 to ₹500 for a full-sleeve or three-quarter high-neck. Petticoat cloth ₹160 to ₹200. Total ₹1,600 to ₹3,600 for a full Dussehra maidan set.
