Navratri Ashtami Kanya Pujan 2026: The Printed-Cotton Hostess Saree For Nine Kanjaks At Home (10 October 2026)
Fabric Guides · 6 minute read · Updated 22 September 2026
The hostess saree for the Ashtami kanjak lunch. Red booti print. Small floral scatter. Kitchen-safe cotton.
Ashtami 2026 is Saturday 10 October. Nine little girls. One boy. One long morning in the kitchen.
The hostess bends down nine times to wash small feet at the door. Hands out puri-halwa-chana. The coconut. The red chunri. The money envelope.
By the fifth kanjak, the pallu is already flour-dusted. By the ninth, the border has caught ghee.
The Kanya Pujan fabric brief is completely different from every other Navratri day.
Why red-booti printed cotton is the Kanya Pujan answer:
- Booti print hides halwa splash and ghee mark, the eye reads pattern first
- Cotton lets you bend nine times to wash kanjak feet without the drape lifting
- Red is the Ashtami colour, small floral scatter reads festive-without-bridal
Quick answer: Ashtami Kanya Pujan is Saturday 10 October 2026. For the family hostess, buy red-booti printed cotton (₹950 to ₹2,200) or off-white chikankari cotton with red thread (₹1,600 to ₹3,200) for a 5.5 metre cut. Keep the pallu print busy enough to hide small stains and skip zari-heavy borders that catch on the low puja stool.
Why this is a kitchen saree day, not a puja room saree day
Kanya Pujan is one of the few Navratri days where the hostess is on her feet in the kitchen from 6 am. Rolling the puris. Tempering the chana. Checking the halwa consistency. The saree is not sitting still on a puja mat.
Every hostess I have talked to at the counter over the last twelve years has said the same thing. Whatever she wore last Kanya Pujan came out of the wash with one visible stain.
Printed cotton solves this at the design level. A small booti or floral scatter on a red or pink base hides a tiny halwa mark far better than a plain silk. The eye reads the pattern first, not the stain.

1. Red base with small white or yellow booti scatter (₹950 to ₹2,200)
Red is the Ashtami colour. A plain red silk saree is bridal-heavy for a kitchen morning. A red base with a small booti scatter reads festive without looking like a wedding. Any drop on the pallu blends into the pattern.
2. Mustard or orange floral scatter (₹1,050 to ₹2,300)
If the hostess is the senior bahu and the sasu-maa is also active in the kitchen, mustard or orange floral reads warm, respectful, not competing with the mother-in-law's red. This is the register that says "I am hosting, but I am not the head of this house."
3. Pink and white floral print (₹950 to ₹2,100)
The pick for the younger daughter-in-law hosting her first Kanya Pujan in her sasural. Gentle, feminine, not-trying-too-hard. The mother-in-law's red takes the visual lead, and the pink complements without competing.
The chikankari alternative for the non-print hostess
Some hostesses do not wear prints. For that customer, a chikankari cotton in an off-white or very pale pink base with red-thread chikan work is the closest register to printed cotton without being printed. Best when there is a helper in the kitchen and the hostess is mostly at the door welcoming kanjaks. Our chikankari fabric range carries the hand-done work that photographs beautifully in the family Ashtami group shot.
3 mistakes that spoil a Kanya Pujan hostess saree
Mistake 1: Wearing a heavy silk with wide zari borders
The border catches on the low puja stool when you bend to wash a kanjak's feet. Nine times, four stitches lost. A soft cotton with a running border avoids the whole problem.
Mistake 2: A new tight blouse stitched three days before
A blouse that has not been broken in feels tight after the second helping of puris. Get the blouse stitched at least a week ahead and wear it once at home before Ashtami.
Mistake 3: Full sequin or glass-work saree
Sequin and mirror catch wrong on the kanjak's braid when she leans forward for the tilak. And they photograph too party-glam for a puja morning.

Questions Kanya Pujan hostesses ask us at the counter
Can I wear a silk saree for Kanya Pujan?
A plain silk-cotton with a small print works. Full heavy silk with wide zari is over-dressed for a kitchen hostess role. Save the heavy silk for a separate Ashtami evening puja if the family has one.
What colour saree should I wear for Kanya Pujan?
Red is the traditional Ashtami colour. Mustard, orange, pink and yellow all work. Pastel red-and-white prints are the safest hostess register.
Is white saree allowed on Ashtami?
A cream or off-white base with red or pink work is acceptable. Pure stark white is less common for Ashtami. Chikankari off-white with red thread reads correctly.
Do I need matching bangles and jewellery?
Simple gold or silver thin bangles, small red bindi, mangalsutra if married. No heavy set. The register is respectful-festive, not wedding-festive.
What is the total budget including tailoring?
Fabric ₹950 to ₹3,200 depending on option. Fall-and-pico ₹120 to ₹150. Blouse stitching ₹200 to ₹450. Petticoat cloth ₹160 to ₹200. Total ₹1,400 to ₹3,900 for a full Kanya Pujan set.
