Get it wrong and the bahu ends up not wearing it. Get it right and it becomes the photo the whole family shares on the family WhatsApp group the next morning.
The three fabrics that work for a sargi suit
1. Chanderi silk, the household favourite
Chanderi silk is the safest sargi fabric. Soft matte body, gentle sheen, works in red, maroon and rani pink, all three shades that suit Karwa Chauth.
Weight around 80 to 100 grams per metre. Not so heavy that the bahu feels wrapped up, not so light that it reads as ordinary. Sits well through the four to five hours between sargi and moon rise.

2. Cotton silk, for the bahu who works long hours
Some bahus keep the fast and go to office the same day. If your bahu is a working woman, cotton silk is the practical pick. Breathable, drapes well, does not crush from a full day of sitting at a desk before the evening puja.
Weight around 90 to 110 grams per metre. Works beautifully in maroon and rani pink. A little less formal than Chanderi silk, but far more comfortable for a full-day wear.

3. Dyeable embroidery, when the saas wants the sargi to feel special
For a saas who wants the sargi to be a proper occasion suit, a lightly embroidered dyeable base is the answer. The bahu can either wear it as-is or send it to a boutique for a touch-up.
Weight varies, usually 120 to 160 grams per metre depending on the embroidery density.

Colours that suit a Karwa Chauth sargi suit
The tradition is red-linked. Karwa Chauth is a suhaag festival, so the colour must sit inside the red family.
- Karwa red, the classic and safest pick, works for any bahu at any age
- Deep maroon, for a bahu who is past 30 and wants a more mature red
- Rani pink, for a young bahu, ideally in the first three years of marriage
- Sindoori orange, only if the bahu is comfortable with a lighter red
- Off-white with a red border, for a bahu who is expecting or recovering, when a full red suit feels heavy
Avoid black, navy, grey and pure white for the sargi suit. These are not suhaag colours for Karwa Chauth in North India.
Avoid heavy zari-and-mirror combinations. The bahu is standing at the terrace with a sieve looking for the moon, not walking a reception aisle.
How much fabric goes into the sargi
The sargi suit should be a complete three-piece unstitched set. Half sets do not carry the same shagun meaning.

The colour of the border and what it says
Older women in the family often check the border before checking the field. Two things matter.
First, if you are gifting a red field, keep the border gold. Red with silver reads as engagement wear, not Karwa Chauth wear.
Second, if you are gifting a maroon or rani pink field, gold border still works, but a fine zari-and-red-thread border is acceptable too. Rani with silver is fine only if your bahu has expressed a preference for silver jewellery over gold.

Karwa Chauth is Friday, 30 October 2026. Sargi is delivered before dawn on 30 October, roughly 4 to 5 AM.
- By 15 October: fabric bought, sent to the dyer if a specific karwa red shade is needed
- By 20 October: dyed pieces returned, quality checked, pressed
- By 25 October: if you want the suit pre-stitched by the bahu's tailor, this is the drop date; if unstitched, this is the final packing date
- 29 October evening: sargi thali packed, suit folded on top with the bindi and mathri
- 30 October pre-dawn: delivered or given in person before the fast begins
If you are the mother-in-law who lives in a different city from the bahu, ship the fabric with a courier by 22 October so it arrives at least three days before Karwa Chauth.
Note: Pitru Paksha runs from 26 September to 10 October 2026. If your household observes it, buy the fabric before 25 September or after 10 October. Do not shop for shagun items during shraddh.
Small gifting notes from the counter
- Wrap the fabric in a plain red satin ribbon, not gold ribbon. Red on red is the shagun colour.
- Include a handwritten line inside the sargi thali. Even one line from the saas in her own writing matters more than the fabric label.
- Do not gift a pre-stitched suit unless you are absolutely certain of your bahu's size. Unstitched is the safer shagun.
- If this is the bahu's first Karwa Chauth, add a red chunni and a small red bindi packet inside the sargi. The suit fabric alone is not enough for pehla karwa chauth.
