Navratri 9 Colour Dupatta Wardrobe, The Easy Fabric Plan for October 2026

Quick Answer

For Navratri 2026 (12 to 20 October), the easiest wardrobe hack is a nine-colour dupatta plan paired with two or three base suits or kurta sets you already own. Buy dupattas in soft cotton, chinon-chiffon or light net so they twirl in garba and layer over office wear the same day. Each dupatta needs 2.25 metres. Book the full nine by 25 September so the dyer and finisher have three full weeks before Sharadiya Navratri Pratipada.

Why the dupatta wardrobe beats the full nine-outfit plan

Nobody has time to stitch nine full suits or nine sarees for Navratri. And most working women in Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad or Bengaluru do not have the wardrobe space for it either.

The dupatta plan solves the problem.

You keep one or two base suits and one plain kurta set. Then you switch the dupatta each of the nine days to match the day's colour. The dupatta does all the visual work. Nobody at the office, at aarti, at the pandal or at the garba noticed you wore the same base suit twice.

I have been recommending this for eight years to the working women who come into the shop in the last week of September. It works.

Also, dupattas are the one piece a woman can genuinely twirl in during garba without worrying about the drape falling off.

The verified nine colours for Navratri 2026

Sharadiya Navratri 2026 runs from Monday, 12 October (Pratipada) to Tuesday, 20 October (Ashtami and Navami combined). The day-wise colour code below follows the panchang most widely used in North India, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Day Date Colour Deity focus
1 (Pratipada) 12 Oct Mon Yellow Shailputri
2 (Dwitiya) 13 Oct Tue Green Brahmacharini
3 (Tritiya) 14 Oct Wed Grey Chandraghanta
4 (Chaturthi) 15 Oct Thu Orange Kushmanda
5 (Panchami) 16 Oct Fri White Skandamata
6 (Shashti) 17 Oct Sat Red Katyayani
7 (Saptami) 18 Oct Sun Royal blue Kalratri
8 (Ashtami) 19 Oct Mon Pink Mahagauri
9 (Navami) 20 Oct Tue Purple Siddhidatri

Regional lists sometimes swap one shade. The list above is the most common panchang setting for Delhi and Mumbai in 2026.

The three dupatta fabrics that carry the whole plan

1. Cotton chanderi, for the office-to-aarti day

For weekday days when you go office to aarti to a short pandal visit, cotton-chanderi dupattas are the workhorse. Soft body, easy drape, no crushing when you carry a work bag under one shoulder.

Weight around 80 to 100 grams per metre. Ivory, cream, yellow, green, orange and pink chanderi all take dyes beautifully.

Our dyeable chanderi collection has 249 pieces you can send to the dyer for the exact panchang shade of each day.

2. Chinon-chiffon, for the garba and dandiya night

Chinon-chiffon is the softest, lightest fabric that still holds a garba twirl. Very fluid drape, no cling, no crush.

Weight around 40 to 60 grams per metre. Ideal for red, royal blue, purple and pink dupattas, the four colours that come up on the biggest garba days (Shashti, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami).

Our chinon chiffon range has 101 pieces sorted by weight, print and border.

3. Soft net or organza, for the aarti-day photo

For Ashtami (Kanjak day) and Navami (kanya pujan), when a family photo happens, a soft net or organza dupatta gives the outfit a special edge without the weight.

Best in pink, red, white and yellow, the aarti-day colours.

Our organza fabric collection has 400 pieces in dyeable and pre-embroidered options. Our net-1 collection has 872 pieces including light nets that hold a soft embroidery.

Colour-day fabric mapping I hand out at the shop

The right fabric depends on the day's activity, not only the colour.

  • Day 1 Yellow, Shailputri: Chanderi in ivory-yellow, office-safe
  • Day 2 Green, Brahmacharini: Cotton-chanderi in bottle-green
  • Day 3 Grey, Chandraghanta: Matte georgette in silver-grey, office-safe
  • Day 4 Orange, Kushmanda: Chinon-chiffon in tangerine, garba-ready
  • Day 5 White, Skandamata: Soft cotton-net in ivory-white with silver
  • Day 6 Red, Katyayani: Chinon-chiffon in tomato-red, garba-ready
  • Day 7 Royal blue, Kalratri: Chinon-chiffon in deep royal blue, dandiya-ready
  • Day 8 Pink, Mahagauri: Organza in soft pink, kanjak pujan day
  • Day 9 Purple, Siddhidatri: Chanderi in aubergine, kanya pujan closing

That gives you a real fabric assignment for every day, not just a colour to hunt for at the market.

How many metres per dupatta

A standard adult dupatta needs 2.25 metres. That covers a shoulder drape with a full 12 to 14 inch pallu on both sides.

Style Metres Notes
Standard shoulder drape 2.25 metres Everyday, office-safe
Extra long garba dupatta 2.5 metres Better twirl, drapes across both shoulders
Small chunni for young girl 1.75 metres For daughters aged 8 to 14
Head-cover dupatta for kanjak day 2.5 metres Pallu long enough to cover head and reach knees

Nine standard dupattas together come to roughly 20 to 22 metres of fabric across three or four weaves.

Booking timeline for the full nine

Navratri Pratipada is Monday, 12 October 2026. If you are dyeing all nine to exact panchang shades, the dyer needs at least three weeks.

  • By 25 September: all nine dupatta pieces bought, cut, sent to the dyer
  • By 3 October: dyed pieces returned, hand-finished at the edges
  • By 10 October: any embroidery, mirror or gota-patti stitched on
  • 11 October evening: all nine pressed and hung day-wise on the wardrobe

If you are picking pre-dyed dupattas off the shelf, you can walk in as late as 8 October. But the panchang shades (grey, aubergine, tangerine) go out of stock first, so do not wait.

Also, if your household follows Pitru Paksha, do not shop between 26 September and 10 October. Buy everything by 25 September or after Mahalaya Amavasya on 10 October.

Small styling notes from the counter

  • Wear the same silver or gold jhumka set through all nine days. Do not try to match jewellery to the dupatta colour every day, it is exhausting.
  • For garba nights, pin the dupatta to the shoulder of the choli with two safety pins so it does not fly off mid-twirl.
  • For Ashtami kanjak, choose a dupatta with a plain field and a small border. Heavy all-over embroidery gets tangled with the small girls' hair and hands.
  • If you want a single embellished dupatta for the reception night after Navami, look at our all dupattas collection with 350 pieces sorted by occasion.

FAQs

What are the nine Navratri colours for 2026?
Yellow, green, grey, orange, white, red, royal blue, pink and purple, in that order from Pratipada on 12 October to Navami on 20 October.

Which fabric is best for a Navratri dupatta?
Cotton-chanderi for office and daytime, chinon-chiffon for garba and dandiya nights, soft net or organza for aarti-day family photos on Ashtami and Navami.

How many metres for one Navratri dupatta?
2.25 metres for a standard shoulder drape. 2.5 metres if you want an extra-long garba dupatta or a head-cover for kanjak day.

Can I dye nine dupattas in one order?
Yes. Send all nine pieces to the dyer together by 25 September 2026. Give the dyer the panchang colour list on paper so no shade is guessed.

Is it okay to wear the same suit under different dupattas during Navratri?
Yes, and it is the smart way to do it. One or two base suits with nine day-wise dupattas is the practical Navratri wardrobe most working women follow.
