Ordering your first sheer suit online and stuck on the lining? This lining fabric guide tells you what to buy under net, organza, chiffon or tissue, how many metres to get and what each one roughly costs. Most buyers ask us this after paying for the net.
The short version: Shantoon goes under net and tissue. Butter crepe goes under chiffon and georgette. Order about 2 to 2.5 metres of lining for a kurta and leave the sleeves sheer.
Quick answer: Our lining fabric guide in one line: match the lining to how the sheer should fall. Put shantoon under net or tissue, butter crepe under chiffon or georgette and soft santoon under organza. Lining costs roughly Rs 60 to Rs 350 a metre. Order your sheer from the net fabric collection and buy 2 to 2.5 metres of lining for a kurta.
Key facts at a glance
Net and tissue sit well on shantoon, chiffon and georgette need butter crepe, organza likes soft santoon and heavy embroidered net often does best on cotton cambric.

A straight knee length kurta needs about 2 to 2.5 metres of 44 inch lining for the front and back panels. Sleeves usually stay sheer, so skip lining for them. Add 0.5 metre if the tailor lines the salwar too.
Flared cuts eat more: an anarkali with eight or more kalis takes roughly 3.5 metres. Above size 40, send us your measurements first.
Matching shade lining is the safe pick for a first order, because it keeps the colour of the sheer true. Skin tone lining makes net look barely there. Contrast lining changes the colour you see, so test it before stitching.
A pale pink net over a gold lining reads as peach in photos. Hold the two together in daylight first.
Lining decides whether a sheer kurta drops close to the body or stands away from it. Butter crepe is heavy and soft, so georgette falls straight with it. Cotton cambric is crisp, so net over cambric holds a fuller A-line shape.
Delhi winter halls run warm once 300 guests are inside. Polyester shantoon traps that heat, so pick breathable cambric under heavy net for a five hour function.
Sequin or zari work already sits on a net base, yet its back can scratch. Lining covers those threads. Ask the tailor to keep it separate from the work so the embroidery moves freely.
A half-lined kurta has lining from bust to hip only, while the yoke and sleeves stay sheer. You get cover where you need it, a lighter feel and a lining order of just 1.25 to 1.5 metres.
At our Lajpat Nagar II counter, Paras Gallery Fabrics tells every buyer to cut lining 1 inch shorter than the outer hem. Lining that peeps below net looks like a slip showing. A shorter lining also stops the hem pulling as the sheer relaxes.
From the boutique side: tailors charge extra for lining, often Rs 300 to Rs 600 more per suit. Ask for the lining cost when you hand over the fabric.
Buying net fabric online from Paras Gallery Fabrics takes five steps. Most first-time buyers skip the sheerness check in step 3.
Order your sheer and lining by 6 November, before Diwali on 8 November. Delhi tailors fill up after Diwali. Lined suits also take longer to stitch.

Yes, you can buy net fabric online from us and pick up the lining at a local shop. Shantoon, butter crepe and cambric are easy to find in most markets. Send us a photo of the lining next to your net on WhatsApp before stitching. We will tell you if the shade or weight looks off.
Yes, pre-wash cotton cambric lining before it goes to the tailor. Cambric can shrink 3 to 5 percent in the first wash, while net and organza barely move. Unwashed lining shrinks later and puckers the outer layer. Soak it in cold water for 30 minutes, dry it in shade and press it while slightly damp.
Butter crepe is better under georgette because both fabrics drop the same way. Shantoon is stiffer and slippery, so georgette over it can bunch at the waist and ride up. Keep shantoon for net and tissue, where a little body helps. Butter crepe costs a bit more, roughly Rs 120 to Rs 250 a metre.
The rule that matters most for organza is to keep the lining soft. Organza already stands away from the body, so a stiff lining makes the kurta look boxy. Soft santoon or silk crepe lets it hold shape without bulk. A half-lined organza kurta stays light at a day wedding.
