Real Kasavu vs Kasavu-style print
Real Kasavu has a woven zari border. The gold thread is part of the fabric. You can feel a slight ridge along the border edge.
Printed Kasavu-style cotton uses gold ink or foil. It looks the same in a photo, but the print fades in 2 to 3 washes and the border feels flat. Real Kasavu also costs 3 to 5 times more per metre. That is the honest gap.
The thumb test I do before I pay
Rub the zari firmly with your thumb for 10 seconds. Real zari holds its colour and its texture. Fake zari dulls, and sometimes leaves a metallic smear on your thumb.
Hold the fabric to a window. Real Kasavu weave shows tiny cotton fibres between the zari threads. Printed Kasavu shows a solid gold band with no weave texture underneath.
