Boutique September Playbook: How I Advise Restocking for Ganesh, Onam and Navratri Together
September is a compressed three-festival month in 2026. Onam on the 5th. Ganesh Chaturthi runs Sept 14 to 24. Navratri opens Sept 22 and closes Oct 1.
For a boutique owner in Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru or a Tier-2 city, the three windows overlap. You cannot restock reactively. Lot delivery lead times are 8 to 12 days from wholesale to boutique shelf.
Most boutiques lose Q3 revenue in the second week because Ganesh customers arrive and the yellow-green cotton-silk lot is still in transit.
Here is the playbook I run with our repeat wholesale clients.
Quick Answer: Lock wholesale orders by August 25. Take delivery in two lots, first week and third week of September. Stock cotton-silk in festival shades, off-white cotton for Onam, and bright semi-silk chinon for Navratri. Cover five colour families across three fabric bases.
Why September needs a playbook, not a list
The three festivals hit different customer segments.
Onam (Sept 5) — Malayali diaspora, working women, mother-daughter dyads. Off-white, cream, subtle zari.
Ganesh Chaturthi (Sept 14–24) — Maharashtrian families, cousins from Pune and Nashik, first-time Nauvari drapers. Yellow, parrot green, peacock blue.
Navratri (Sept 22–Oct 1) — Gujarati, Rajasthani, and pan-India dance-night customers. Bright bandhani, chinon, mirror-work.
If your boutique tries to stock for one and miss two, you leave 60 percent of September revenue on the table.
The two-lot delivery structure
Lot 1 (arrive at boutique by Sept 1):
- Off-white cotton with zari border (Onam base)
- Yellow, parrot green cotton-silk (Ganesh early prep)
- Basic bandhani chinon (Navratri opener stock)
Lot 2 (arrive at boutique by Sept 15):
- Semi-Paithani Nauvari cuts (Ganesh peak)
- Peacock blue, magenta cotton-silk (Ganesh late buyers)
- Mirror-work chaniya choli fabric (Navratri peak)
- Bandhani dupattas (Navratri accessory sales)
Book both lots by August 25 with your wholesale partner. Lot 1 delivery cutoff is Aug 28. Lot 2 cutoff is Sept 8.
Fabric bases to prioritize
1. Cotton-silk (highest turnover)
Runs across Ganesh and daily festive wear. Order 60 to 80 metres in five colours: yellow, parrot green, peacock blue, magenta, mustard. Margin 40 to 55 percent on retail.
2. Off-white Kasavu cotton (Onam-specific)
Order 30 to 50 metres in 80s and 100s count. Real zari border, not printed. Margin 35 to 50 percent. Onam customers pay premium for authenticity.
3. Bandhani chinon (Navratri specific)
Order in pieces (2.5-metre dupatta cuts), not metres. Stock 25 to 40 pieces across red, yellow, green, blue. Margin 50 to 65 percent, best in the September restock category.
4. Semi-Paithani Nauvari (Ganesh peak)
Order 8-metre cuts, 15 to 20 pieces. Peacock blue, magenta, mustard. Margin 45 to 60 percent. High-ticket sales: one Nauvari sale equals five cotton-silk sales.
5. Mirror-work chaniya choli fabric (Navratri)
Order 40 to 60 metres. Deep colours: rani pink, deep green, orange, royal blue. Margin 40 to 55 percent. Bulk buys from garba organizers add volume.

Boutique merchandising notes
Window display switch. Off-white Kasavu Aug 28 to Sept 8. Yellow-green Ganesh cotton-silk Sept 8 to Sept 22. Bandhani chinon and mirror-work Sept 22 onward.
Mannequin styling. One Nauvari drape sample on display from Sept 8. First-time Nauvari buyers need to see the kashta drape before they commit.
Cross-sell. Every Kasavu dupatta buyer needs a plain cream cotton kurta. Stock 15 to 20 kurta pieces alongside.
WhatsApp broadcast. Send a colour catalogue to your customer list 5 days before each festival, not 2 days before.
Priced offers. "Buy 2 dupattas, get free fall stitching" outperforms flat discount in September.
Mistakes I see in boutique restocking
Ordering all fabric in one lot. Cash flow blocks and old stock rot. Split into two lots always.
Skipping Nauvari because "Delhi is not Maharashtrian". Every Delhi boutique has 5 to 8 Maharashtrian regulars who buy Nauvari annually. Miss them once, lose them forever.
Overstocking bandhani in month 2. Navratri ends Oct 1. Leftover bandhani dupattas after Oct 5 sit until next year.
Ignoring mother-daughter Onam sets. A matched set sells for 1.8x a single dupatta. Stock in pairs.
Not booking karigar in advance. Blouse and fall stitching capacity fills by Sept 5. Book karigar time by Aug 30.
