The Saree Sasu-Maa Buys For The New Bahu's First Karva Chauth

Quick Answer (Sasu-Maa Karva Chauth Gift Saree, In 90 Seconds)

Karva Chauth 2026 falls on Friday, 30 October. If your daughter-in-law is keeping her first Karva Chauth this year, tradition says the sasu-maa gifts a red or maroon suhaag saree along with the sargi thali. A red or deep-maroon banarasi-style silk-jacquard saree in a 6.3-metre cut with a gold zari border is the correct register. Skip cotton for this saree, it is a lifelong keepsake, not a working saree. Skip synthetic georgette that will look tired after two washes. You want fabric the new bahu can wear for her first Karva Chauth photo, her second Karva Chauth, and her tenth. Silk-jacquard, dyeable banarasi, or heavy chanderi with gold border hits all three occasions.

I am Sneha, and I sit at the Paras Gallery Fabrics counter in Central Market, Lajpat Nagar. Yesterday four sasu-maas walked in with the same request. "Beti ki pehli Karva Chauth hai, saree gift karni hai, kya lu?" Not a store-bought stitched saree from a chain shop. A proper running-length fabric that she can get stitched to her measurements and keep for life.

Here is the register I sat with them on.

When Is Karva Chauth In 2026, And Why This Gift Saree Is Different

Karva Chauth this year is 30 October, Friday. For a first-year bahu, this is the first fast she keeps at her sasural. The sargi comes from the sasu-maa before sunrise. The moon-sighting saree is worn at 7:30 PM at the evening puja.

The saree the sasu-maa gifts is not for that one evening. It becomes the family heirloom saree. She will wear it for every Karva Chauth for the next twenty years. It will move to Diwali family photos. It will come out at her own children's first Karva Chauth.

So the fabric decision is not "budget for one evening". The fabric decision is "will she still want to wear this in five years?"

The Four Fabrics That Work For A Bahu's Gift Saree

Here is what I recommend at the counter, based on what sasu-maas return telling me the bahu still wears years later.

1. Silk-jacquard (red or deep-maroon, gold zari all-over motif)
This is the honest first pick. Silk-jacquard is 60 to 70 percent silk with a jacquard-loom motif that carries visual weight without needing embroidery. Falls with proper saree drape. Holds colour through hundreds of washes. Photographs red-and-gold at both puja-light and daylight.

2. Banarasi-style dyeable silk (deep-red with gold border you can rework)
For sasu-maas who want a proper Banarasi-register but at a fair price. Dyeable banarasi comes with the gold border woven and the body plain. Get it dyed at Krishna Nagar in red or maroon per your preference. Wears like a proper Banarasi.

3. Heavy chanderi with wide gold zari border
For a bahu who is small-built or thin. Silk-jacquard weighs 700 to 900 grams for the full saree. Heavy chanderi weighs 400 grams. Same visual gravity, less physical weight for a 5'2" young bahu.

4. Dola-silk style silk-jacquard (for the mother-in-law from a Marwari or Gujarati family)
Regional register. Dola-silk woven-motif jacquard with kalash and swastika motifs. Fits weddings held under the Marwari or Gujarati muhurat tradition. Comes in maroon-and-gold as standard.

Colours That Match The First Karva Chauth Register

The colour is not up for debate. First Karva Chauth is red or maroon, no other option.

  • Solid red (the honest suhaag colour)
  • Deep maroon (for sasu-maas who feel bright red is "too young")
  • Red with gold zari border (the safest register)
  • Maroon with gold buti motif (for evening-puja photos)
  • Rani-pink shading into red (only if the bahu specifically loves rani-pink)

Colours sasu-maas ask me to avoid: pink alone (not a suhaag colour), orange (Bihari-Purvanchali register only), black (never for suhaag), green (Sindhi register, not a North Indian sasural register), and pastels (save for the second-year Karva Chauth).

Fabric Cut List (What To Ask For At The Counter)

Sarees at Paras Gallery are always sold as running-length fabric, not stitched pieces. So the cut looks like this.

  • Saree body: 6.3 metres of the silk-jacquard or dyeable banarasi
  • Blouse piece: 1 metre of matching or contrast (buy separately, we do not bundle it)
  • Dupatta piece (for the sargi ceremony): 2.25 metres of a red net or georgette (optional)
  • Fall attachment: buy the matching fall separately, we can get it stitched in 3 days
  • Petticoat cloth: cambric cotton, 2 metres, in matching red or maroon

If your sargi ceremony includes a dupatta cover-the-head moment (common in Punjabi and Haryanvi families), add the 2.25-metre dupatta piece. If your family does a saree-only ritual, skip the dupatta cut.

What Sasu-Maas Actually Ask For

Twelve sasu-maas walked in this month for the same brief. I am collapsing their asks into one clean list.

  • "Pehli Karva Chauth hai, bahu ki, life-time saree hona chahiye"
  • "Red ya maroon dono chalega, but gold zari zaroor ho"
  • "Silk chahiye, cotton nahi, gift dena hai"
  • "Blouse piece contrast chahiye, gold ya cream"
  • "Stitching yahin karwao, bahu ka measurement bhej dungi"
  • "Sargi ke saath dena hai, packaging bhi acchi ho"

If your ask is the same, you are already on the right register.

Where To Sit For The Fitting

Central Market, Lajpat Nagar. Our counter opens 11 AM. Ideally bring the bahu herself for the drape check. If she is not in Delhi, bring her measurements and a recent photo. Silk-jacquard falls differently on a 5'0" bahu versus a 5'8" one, and the zari-motif density needs to match her frame.

If you cannot come in, WhatsApp +91 96544 40244 and we ship anywhere in Delhi NCR same-day (before 2 PM order). For Karva Chauth on 30 October, we recommend ordering by 20 October to allow 5 working days for stitching and one buffer day for the pre-Karva-Chauth trial drape.

Budget Bands (Sasu-Maa Gift Saree Fabric)

Fabric cost only, per 6.3-metre cut. Blouse and stitching priced separately.

Register Fabric Type Fabric Cost (6.3 m) Add For Blouse Add For Stitching
Straightforward gift Silk-jacquard red or maroon ~₹3,800 to ₹6,500 ~₹700 ~₹850
Banarasi-style gift Dyeable banarasi silk ~₹4,800 to ₹8,000 ~₹800 ~₹850
Light-weight register Heavy chanderi gold border ~₹3,500 to ₹5,500 ~₹650 ~₹850
Regional gift Dola-silk-jacquard ~₹4,500 to ₹7,500 ~₹800 ~₹950

Stitching (fall + blouse) is separate and takes 5 working days at Lajpat Nagar tailors for silk-jacquard. Book by 20 October for a 30 October Karva Chauth.

Packaging Notes (Because It Is A Gift)

  • Ask us for the padded saree box (₹250 add-on) instead of the plastic bag
  • Wrap the fall attachment separately in tissue
  • Attach a hand-written card, we can supply blank cards free
  • Do NOT courier this. Hand-deliver at the sargi ceremony morning if possible

Care Note For The Bahu, To Pass On With The Gift

  • Dry-clean only after every wear, never wash at home
  • Store in a cotton sari cover, not plastic
  • Fold with the pallu inside so zari does not tarnish
  • Air out once every 3 months to prevent yellowing
  • Iron on silk setting, back of the fabric only, never directly on zari

FAQs

Q1. What is the best saree fabric for a bahu's first Karva Chauth gift?
A red or deep-maroon silk-jacquard saree in a 6.3-metre running cut with a gold zari border. Silk-jacquard photographs correctly under evening puja light, holds colour through decades of wear, and reads as a proper suhaag heirloom rather than a fast-fashion buy.

Q2. Should I buy a stitched saree or fabric for stitching?
Fabric for stitching, every time. A stitched ready-made saree from a chain shop is measured for average sizes and never fits the bahu's actual frame. Running-length fabric plus custom stitching at Lajpat Nagar (₹850 for fall + blouse) fits her exactly and lasts.

Q3. My bahu prefers pastels. Can I gift a pastel saree for her first Karva Chauth?
Not for the first-year Karva Chauth suhaag saree. That one must be red or maroon per tradition. For her second-year and onward, gift her a pastel Karva Chauth saree if that suits her taste, no protocol violation there.

Q4. Do you gift-wrap and pack the saree?
Yes. Padded saree box (₹250 add-on), tissue-wrapped fall piece, and a blank card. We do not ship gift-wrapped orders, only hand-collect at the counter, so plan your visit before Karva Chauth week.

Q5. What is the difference between dyeable banarasi and regular silk-jacquard?
Dyeable banarasi comes with the gold zari border pre-woven and the body plain, ready to dye in any shade at Krishna Nagar. Silk-jacquard comes pre-dyed with the full motif woven. Dyeable banarasi lets you choose the exact red-vs-maroon tone. Silk-jacquard is simpler if you trust the mill's colour choice.

Q6. When should I order the fabric to have the saree ready for 30 October?
Order the running length by 20 October, 2 PM. That gives 2 days delivery inside Delhi, 5 days for tailoring at Lajpat Nagar (silk-jacquard needs longer stitching than cotton), 2 days for the pre-Karva-Chauth trial drape, and one buffer day.
