Sharad Purnima 2026 White Silk Saree Fabric: Kheer Under the Full Moon (3 October Guide)

Quick Answer

Sharad Purnima 2026, also called Kojagiri Purnima, falls on Saturday, 3 October. The full-moon night carries a kheer-under-the-moon ritual across most Bengali, Odia, Maharashtrian and North Indian households. The saree fabric that suits this night is a white or cream cotton-silk, dyeable chanderi, or soft silk saree with a light gold or silver zari border. Skip heavy georgette, hard net and dense sequins. The idea is a moon-reflective drape that stays comfortable for a 2 to 3 hour terrace or courtyard sitting. Budget 6.3 to 6.5 metres of running-length fabric for the saree plus a blouse cut. Do the fabric buy in the 17 to 25 September window so tailoring is done before Pitru Paksha closes on 10 October.

Why Sharad Purnima has a fabric of its own

Most of my Bengali and Marathi customers come in for Sharad Purnima only around the last week of September. They know the puja room is set, the kheer is planned, but the saree gets rethought every year. It is not a bridal night, it is not a Diwali night, and it is not a regular puja night either. The ritual is quiet.

The kheer is left out overnight under the moon so it catches the Amrit-varsha (the nectar-fall). The family sits on a terrace or in a courtyard. In Delhi that means October air on a stone floor for two to three hours. The saree has to work for that setting.

That gives us three fabric rules for Sharad Purnima:

  • The colour has to reflect moonlight, not absorb it. So white, cream, ivory, silver-white or pale gold.
  • The drape has to breathe on a cool floor, so cotton-silk, chanderi cotton or a soft silk. Not a hot georgette, not a plastic hard-net.
  • The border has to be light zari or thin gold, not a heavy 6-inch kundan border. Heavy border sits badly on a folded knee.

The three fabrics I put on the counter for Sharad Purnima

1. Dyeable chanderi cotton in ivory or cream

The most-asked fabric for this night in the last three years. Chanderi cotton has a matte glow that reads beautifully under the moon and a slightly stiff drape that holds a pleat on a terrace floor. Take it in ivory or off-white and add a thin gold or silver-tissue border at the tailor.

Browse the dyeable chanderi collection. This handle holds around 249 fabrics right now, plenty for a puja-white or pale-gold pick.

2. Soft silk in white or cream

For older women in the household, especially anyone above 55 who prefers a heavier fall on the pleat, a soft silk saree in white with a thin gold zari border is the traditional Sharad Purnima drape. It is what my nani calls a Kojagiri saree, and it lasts for years.

Browse the silk saree fabric collection. Please use this handle, not the near-empty /silk one.

3. Cotton with a woven silver border

For a slightly younger, easier version, plain body cotton in white or off-white with a woven silver or gold border works. Cotton reads beautifully by kheer-bowl candlelight, and it does not weigh the drape down.

Browse the cotton running-length fabric.

Fabric-metrage plan

Item Cut
Saree, running length 5.5 metre
Blouse 0.8 metre
Petticoat lining 0.8 metre
Total 7.1 metre approx

If you want a matching narrow gold-border dupatta for the puja arti, add 2.25 metre from the all-dupattas collection.

Colour, in detail

For Sharad Purnima 2026 the reading of the day gives us:

  • White for the moon (chandra) and Amrit-varsha.
  • Cream, ivory, off-white as gentler options for older women or for a household preference.
  • Pale gold as an accent border only, not the full body.
  • Silver-white for a modern take.

What to avoid on this specific night:

  • Deep red or maroon. That is a Diwali or Karwa Chauth colour, not a Kojagiri colour.
  • Black, charcoal, dark blue. Sharad Purnima is a light-reading night.
  • Neon or fluorescent bright. Reads harsh against a moonlit terrace.

Blouse, drape and jewellery notes

  • Blouse: simple round-neck or boat-neck in the same fabric. Puff sleeve or three-quarter sleeve for terrace-air comfort. Skip heavy zardozi on the back, it hurts to lean against a chair on cool tile for two hours.
  • Drape: nivi drape works for everyone. If the household is Marathi, the nine-yard nauvari drape works too, and the fabric-cut becomes 8.2 metre instead of 5.5.
  • Jewellery: pearl or moonstone reads better under moonlight than kundan. Keep it light. Avoid heavy gold jhumka that pulls the earlobe after two hours on a cool night.

What Delhi weather does on Sharad Purnima night

Delhi in early October is a warm-afternoon, cool-evening city. The terrace sitting starts around 8:30 PM and the kheer is left out around 11:00 PM. Temperature dips to 21 to 23 degrees Celsius by then. That is why a pure georgette or a synthetic net saree feels wrong. The right fabric is one that gives light insulation on a stone or tile floor without becoming heavy in the belly-pleat.

Cotton-silk or dyeable chanderi is what I hand to my Delhi customers for this night, nine times out of ten.

When to buy the fabric (and the Pitru Paksha rule)

Sharad Purnima 2026 is on Saturday, 3 October. Pitru Paksha 2026 starts on Saturday, 26 September and closes on Saturday, 10 October (Mahalaya Amavasya is 10 Oct).

Notice the overlap. Sharad Purnima falls inside Pitru Paksha this year. That does not stop the ritual, because Kojagiri Purnima is a Lakshmi ceremony and it goes ahead. But observant households do not want to buy new clothes inside the shraddh window.

So the fabric-buy plan is:

  • 17 to 25 September: buy the fabric and hand it to your tailor. Ask for a 7-day turnaround. Saree ready by 25 September evening.
  • 26 September to 2 October: no new-clothes shopping. The saree is already stitched.
  • 3 October, Saturday: wear it for the kheer-under-the-moon sitting.

If your household does not observe Pitru Paksha, buy any time before 28 September. That gives the tailor a full working week.

For boutique owners restocking

If you run a Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida or Faridabad boutique that caters to Bengali, Odia, Marathi or North-Indian Sharad Purnima customers, keep three whites on the floor from mid-September:

  • Cotton-silk (dyeable chanderi) in cream and ivory, thin gold border.
  • Soft silk in white with narrow zari, for the 50+ shopper.
  • Cotton with woven silver border, for the everyday-buy shopper.

FAQ

Q1. What is the best sharad purnima silk saree fabric for 2026?
A cream or ivory dyeable chanderi cotton-silk with a thin gold border is the most-asked fabric. For older women in the household, a soft white silk saree with a narrow zari border is the traditional Kojagiri drape.

Q2. Can I wear a coloured saree for Sharad Purnima, or does it have to be white?
White, cream, ivory and pale gold are the traditional reading of the night because the ritual honours the full moon. A pale-gold or silver-white saree still respects the moonlight-reflective idea. Deep red, maroon, black and neon shades are best avoided for this night.

Q3. How many metres of fabric do I need for a Sharad Purnima saree?
5.5 metre for the saree, 0.8 metre for the blouse, 0.8 metre for the petticoat lining. Around 7.1 metre total. Marathi nauvari drape needs 8.2 metre for the saree instead of 5.5.

Q4. Is Sharad Purnima 2026 inside Pitru Paksha, and does that affect fabric buying?
Yes. Sharad Purnima 2026 (3 October) falls inside Pitru Paksha (26 September to 10 October). Complete the fabric buy and stitching by 25 September evening so the saree is ready without shopping inside the shraddh window.

Q5. What blouse fabric works with a chanderi Sharad Purnima saree?
Same fabric, same colour family. A cream chanderi blouse with a boat-neck or round-neck and three-quarter sleeve is comfortable for a two-hour terrace sitting. Avoid heavy zardozi on the back.

Q6. Is a synthetic net or georgette saree wrong for Sharad Purnima?
Not wrong, but not comfortable. The kheer-under-the-moon sitting lasts 2 to 3 hours on a terrace or courtyard floor. A cotton-silk or chanderi handles the cool October air better than a synthetic net or georgette.
