What is muslin fabric is the question that comes up every time a buyer sees a soft, slightly sheer cotton draped on a counter display. The answer in one line: a fine-yarn plain-weave cotton that reads cool, soft and light on skin. The thread count decides the hand. The use decides the count.
The Delhi summer kurta cluster runs mid-March to end-July. Chikankari kurtas on muslin. Soft dupattas on muslin. Printed muslin kurta sets for office. Baby wraps on medium-count muslin. Each one calls for a different thread count and a different weight band.
Muslin is cotton woven plain, with fine yarn. The lower the thread count, the sheerer the fabric. The higher the count, the softer and more durable the finish.
Here is our Delhi counter breakdown for the muslin fabric decision.
THE WINNING MOVE: PICK THE THREAD COUNT TO MATCH THE USE. HIGH-COUNT FOR CHIKANKARI, MEDIUM-COUNT FOR DAILY KURTAS, LOW-COUNT FOR BABY LINEN.
Quick answer: Fine-yarn plain-weave cotton that reads cool and soft on skin. Pick medium count for a daily kurta, high count for a chikankari piece or an heirloom dupatta. The cotton collection at 384 cuts covers the subject in one browse. For a hands-on viewing, book a counter slot.
Muslin is cotton woven in the plainest possible way: one warp thread passes over one weft thread, over and over, in a tight even grid. There is no twill, no satin interlacing, no figured weave. The yarn is the fine part of the formula. Thin cotton yarn spun from long-staple fibre gives muslin its soft hand and slight translucency. The original Dhaka muslin was so fine that six metres could pass through a wedding ring.
Sheer and translucent. Light enough for a baby swaddle, a dupatta inner or a summer curtain. Reads very cool on skin but needs a lining under a kurta cut.
Summer kurta band. Still cool but holds a shape well enough for a Pakistani-cut shirt or a Pathani kurta. Needs only a light inner for an opaque finish.
The softest and most durable muslin. Reads premium under daylight, holds a sharp pleat and lasts twenty to thirty washes. Close to silk when the count sits around 180.
Collector band. Pure handloom muslin from a Bengali or Lucknow weave at this count reads like a different fabric altogether. Rare at the counter.
Pure cotton muslin is the standard. Blended muslin adds polyester or viscose to the warp or weft to bring down the price and reduce wrinkle. Pure muslin wrinkles easily but washes well, lasts long and reads premium. Blended muslin wrinkles less, washes faster and reads daily. For a chikankari piece, a baby wrap or an heirloom dupatta, pure is the right call. For a daily kurta you wear every day and wash every week, blended is fine.

Browse Cotton →A 40-count muslin is too sheer for a kurta without a heavy inner. Reach for 60 to 100 count. The feel stays cool and the fabric is opaque enough that a Shantoon lining is enough.
A good muslin lets your breath pass through a swatch held across your mouth. If the fabric blocks the breath, the weave is tighter than muslin should be and the piece is probably mislabeled.
A pure muslin kept folded for long creases permanently at the fold lines. Roll it on a hanger or around a cardboard tube. For colour whites, keep away from direct sunlight to prevent yellowing.
If you prefer to touch the fabric before cutting, book a 60-minute counter slot. The team drapes both fabrics on a bust form, measures the hand live and confirms exactly which fabric your use and function actually need. The what is cotton fabric guide walks the subject in further detail; the muslin for summer benefits covers the parallel comparison.
Close but not identical. Mulmul is a sub-category of muslin, typically softer and lighter than the average muslin at the counter. All mulmul is muslin. Not all muslin is mulmul. For a buyer, both read cool and soft; the difference lives in the count.
Yes. The plain weave takes dye, block print and digital print evenly. Chikankari lives on muslin because the fine yarn carries thread work without pulling. Hand-block prints read fresh on medium-count muslin.
A pure muslin can shrink 3 to 5 percent on the first wash. Buy an extra 10 to 15 centimetres on a kurta cut so your tailor has room after the first wash settles the fabric. Pre-washed muslin saves most of that shrinkage.
For winter base layers worn under a kurta or a jacket, yes. On its own, muslin reads too light for a Delhi December. Reach for cotton chanderi or a heavier plain cotton for winter kurtas.

Muslin needs a hand check and a light check before you commit to a cut. The team drapes two or three count bands on a bust form so you can feel the hand difference and pick the band that matches the piece you are stitching.
