Crepe Fabric in 2026: The Drape That Made Indo-Western Suits the Highest Selling Category This Year
Crepe fabric is a lightweight cloth with a crinkled, pebbled surface created by tightly twisted yarns or chemical treatment. In 2026 it ranges from Rs 180 per metre for American crepe to Rs 1,200 per metre for pure silk crepe used in designer Indo-western suits, palazzo sets, and dresses.
Twelve summers I have watched fabric trends move through this market. Some years it was net. Some georgette. Some organza. This year crepe is what boutique-walas keep walking in asking for. Crepe now sells more units per week in our shop than chiffon and georgette combined.
Why this matters as a buyer. Crepe is one of the most misunderstood fabrics because at least five different cloths get sold under the crepe label. American crepe is not silk crepe. Georgette crepe is not pure crepe. Price gap runs five to seven times. Last March a Mumbai reseller came in asking for "silk crepe at Rs 350 per metre." I had to tell him, bhaiya, real silk crepe starts at Rs 850. Whatever you got quoted at Rs 350 is polyester. He had already ordered two thaan from another wholesaler.
This is the conversation I have with every buyer asking for crepe.

The best crepe fabric in 2026 depends on use. Pick American crepe at Rs 180 to Rs 280 per metre for daily-wear suits. Choose georgette crepe at Rs 320 to Rs 480 for boutique-finished Indo-western dresses. Go for pure silk crepe at Rs 850 to Rs 1,200 for designer dresses and formal palazzo sets. Crepe drapes closer to the body than satin or chiffon.
What crepe fabric actually is
Crepe is a fabric category defined by surface texture rather than fibre content. The crinkled finish comes from one of three methods. Twisted yarn weaving is the first, where highly twisted warp and weft relax after weaving to create the puckered surface. True crepe. Chemical treatment with caustic soda is the second, where flat-woven cloth shrinks unevenly. Faux crepe. Embossed crepe is the third, where heat stamps the pattern onto a synthetic base.
Quality swings on three things. Fibre content matters most. Pure silk crepe drapes heaviest. Polyester American crepe drapes lighter but holds shape better. Viscose sits in the middle for breathability. Yarn twist count next. Higher twist gives better texture but costs more. GSM band last. Lighter crepe 60 to 80 GSM works for flowing dresses. Heavier 110 to 140 GSM for structured Indo-western suits.

The four crepe fabric grades I stock for 2026
American crepe (polyester)
100 percent polyester with chemical crepe treatment. GSM 90 to 120. Price Rs 180 to Rs 280 per metre. Most affordable crepe. Sold heavily for daily-wear kurtis, palazzo sets, ready-to-stitch suits in the sub-Rs 1,800 retail bracket. Drapes for structured cuts, holds colours brightly, survives machine washing. Synthetic feel becomes noticeable in Delhi humidity. Not breathable for May to July daily wear.
Polyester georgette crepe
Polyester base with finer crepe texture and softer hand feel than American. GSM 70 to 95. Price Rs 320 to Rs 480 per metre. Popular for boutique Indo-western dresses, suit sets Rs 2,200 to Rs 4,800 finished. Drapes softer and reads more flowing on the body. Works well for A-line kurtas, anarkalis, palazzo trousers. Holds digital and screen prints sharply.
Viscose crepe (semi-synthetic)
Viscose rayon base with true twisted-yarn crepe weaving. GSM 90 to 110. Price Rs 480 to Rs 720 per metre. Mid-range crepe where breathability matters. Cellulose absorption with synthetic drape behaviour. Best for formal Indo-western dresses, office-wear sets, summer-festive kurtis. Pre-shrinkage matters. Last August a Greater Kailash bhabhi came back unhappy because her Rs 6,800 viscose anarkali shrank 5 percent after the first wash. Stitcher had not pre-shrunk the cloth.
Pure silk crepe (mulberry or crepe de chine)
100 percent mulberry silk with true twisted-yarn construction. GSM 60 to 90. Price Rs 850 to Rs 1,200 per metre. Designer-tier crepe for high-end dresses, formal palazzo sets, boutique Indo-western Rs 8,000 to Rs 28,000 retail. Drape is what separates pure silk from synthetic copies. Cloth falls in continuous folds against the body without stiffness, which is why designer dresses photograph differently in silk crepe. The silk fabric section carries pure silk crepe in limited dye palettes.
How much crepe fabric you actually need
Crepe is lighter and softer, which means yardage differs from heavier weaves. The fabric estimator tool handles crepe pre-shrinkage by fibre type.

How to spot fake silk crepe sold as pure silk
The market sells plenty of polyester crepe labelled as silk crepe at silk prices. Mumbai reseller from earlier was about to get caught. Three checks help.
Drape test first. Hang a metre from your hand and let it fall. Pure silk crepe falls in soft continuous folds with a slight weight pull. Polyester crepe falls in stiffer folds with visible peaks. Visible within five seconds.
Burn test next on a selvedge thread. Pure silk leaves soft grey ash with a burnt hair smell. Polyester leaves a hard black bead with sweet chemical smell. Viscose leaves soft white-grey ash with paper smell.
Wrinkle test last. Crush a corner tight for ten seconds, then release. Pure silk crepe creases sharply but creases relax slowly over 30 to 60 minutes. Polyester crepe shows almost no crease. Viscose holds the crease longest.
For verified silk with composition tagging, the silk collection lists every bolt with fibre certification.
How crepe choice changes the finished garment price
Two crepe dresses that look identical on a hanger can land at completely different prices because of base cloth.
American crepe Indo-western dress with simple stitching lands Rs 1,400 to Rs 3,200 in fabric plus tailoring. Move to polyester georgette crepe, Rs 2,800 to Rs 5,600 because of softer drape. Execute in viscose crepe, Rs 4,800 to Rs 9,500 because viscose costs more per metre. Same cut in pure silk crepe, Rs 11,000 to Rs 26,000 because silk crepe base alone costs three to five times more.

Crepe care and stitching tips
Few rules tailors and customers keep getting wrong.
Pre-shrink crepe before cutting, especially viscose and silk. Both shrink 3 to 5 percent in the first wash. Hand wash a swatch first or steam press at high temperature before laying the cloth. Exactly the situation the Greater Kailash bhabhi avoided would have changed her experience.
Fine ballpoint machine needle in size 70 on crepe. Standard sharp needles snag twisted yarns and leave visible runs along the seam. For hem hand finishing, use mulmul thread or fine cotton instead of polyester.
Hand wash crepe in cold water with mild detergent. Machine wash acceptable for American crepe and polyester georgette on gentle cycle. Viscose and silk crepe always hand washed. Never wring. Wringing permanently distorts the surface texture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is crepe fabric good for Indo-western dresses?
Yes, crepe is among the most popular fabrics for Indo-western because it drapes closer to body than chiffon or satin. Polyester georgette crepe for budget dresses. Viscose for daily-wear comfort. Pure silk for designer-tier with photogenic drape.
What is the price of crepe fabric per metre in 2026?
American crepe Rs 180 to Rs 280. Polyester georgette Rs 320 to Rs 480. Viscose Rs 480 to Rs 720. Pure silk crepe Rs 850 to Rs 1,200 per metre.
How many metres of crepe for a three piece suit set?
Standard three piece set needs 4.5 to 5 metres. Add 0.5 metres extra for print matching at side seams. Floor-length dresses 3.5 to 4 metres. Anarkali kurtis 3 to 3.5 metres.
Is American crepe pure silk?
No, American crepe is 100 percent polyester with chemical crepe treatment. Name comes from original USA-manufactured crepe rather than the fibre. Pure silk crepe is separate, made from mulberry silk with twisted-yarn weaving, costing four to six times more.
Can crepe fabric be machine washed?
American and polyester georgette crepe can be machine washed on gentle cycle in cold water. Viscose and pure silk should be hand washed. Never wring.
Which crepe is best for a daily-wear kurti in summer?
Viscose crepe gives the best balance of breathability and drape. Cellulose absorbs moisture. Crepe weave allows air circulation. Drape sits softer than American crepe.
The honest takeaway from the shop counter
Crepe is the cloth where fibre matters more than surface texture. American crepe sells the most volume because it is cheapest and easiest to print. Polyester georgette crepe is the workhorse for boutique Indo-western. Viscose crepe is the comfort upgrade for natural-fibre breathability. Pure silk crepe is designer-tier for dresses where drape is the design.
